I know there was a thread on this back in December, but is anyone actually using it? Anyone have any other suggestions on good GPS units. I want to be able to use it as a cyclecomputer as well as be able to chart my route on my computer after the ride.

    Thanks,
    Steve

I actually picked up a Garmin Edge 305HR in early February.

In addition to the included Garmin Training Center, I'm using Sport Tracks.
Sport Tracks allows you to export to Google Earth, so you end up with stuff like this.

That is Maple Springs to Motorway.

It's kind of neat to log your rides too. In February, I went on 11 rides totaling 137.56 miles and 14,632 feet in elevation gain.

I used to use one, Garmin Legend, but the novelty wore off. When I first started riding I used it to gage my limits. How much elevation I could climb in a day, how steep a pitch I could ride up, how many miles before I bonked. Then I could pick new rides within my limits.

Today I use it occasionaly, mainly when in a new area, I download waypoints to help me find trailheads and keep me on the right trail. Once I know I area I have no need for it. It fact I do not even use a bike computer anymore.

I have lots of track logs, 73 Garmin files and 103 National Geographic files. Tell me what trail you want, if I have it...I will shoot you a e-mail.

There are programs out there that will convert them to Google files. It is just as easy to load the file back into the GPS then download it again into your software of choice. I have not used Google Earth for software but I understand that it does read Garmin files, not sure about NG Topo.

I just started using Google Earth Plus--I use SporTraks as well with my Garmin Forerunner 301--and I don't get images anywhere near that cool on Google Earth. Is it because you're using a better GPS unit (the 305) or am I not using Google Earth to it's full potential??

There shouldn't be a difference between the units. What I did was import using Sport Tracks, and then do an export to Google Earth (I don't have the plus version).

From there, just pan/tilt/zoom until you get what you want. Be sure to turn on Terrain.

Overall, the graphics on the menus are easy to follow - like programming your cell phone. It allows you to use three different bikes (by weight, tire size - ie. hardtail, downhill or road bike), enter your weight and HR or cadence pickup (or both). I have both HR & cadence, but will only use the cadence sensor on my road bike.
Cool to see that Sport-Trak software is free, I'm definitely using that!

Maybe I don't have "terrain" turned on. I'll have to go in and mess around with it. I exported it from SporTraks to Google Earth like you did. Thanks for the info.

    Any Garmin 305 experts?

Hi, I recently got a 305 and cannot get the heart monitor to talk to the Edge. I replaced the battery and reset it , but nothing. I think I have the sensors wet enough. I've also tried wearing a cotton shirt, but nothing, it just keep flashing. Thank you, Everett :?:
