Glendora Mountain Road up to the white gate at the end of the dirt road starting from my house near Bonelli Park . Got home a couple hours early and grabbed the road bike because it just felt right. What an awesome day. Killer weather. Polite drivers. Polite riders (two others coming down). And happy county road workers. Damn, everyone was happy. And could see all the way to the ocean... 36.4 miles 2hrs 24mins 3128 ft vertical 2150 calories And the best part, scantily clad young women sunning themselves halfway up on a turnout...
Doesn't get much better than that. Only thing I can think of is some dirt below the tires. BTW. Were riding Marshall tomorrow night.
I did it Sunday. 107.6 miles 7hrs 44mins 6780 ft vertical lots of calories I started up and I was going to do GRR also but wasn't sure if I'd make it. I did. I also rode the whole 107 on two bottles of water. I didn't realize it until later on in the evening that I never refilled. Love that ride!
Woohoo! GMR is my January/Feb ride. Great climb, glad you enjoyed it. Now you're ready for the San Dimas Stage Race
MargaMan - I SAW you out there (maybe...) Parked along the Little Dalton Road to gear up. Started riding around 530PM. Moderate effort (150 HR) for an hour gets me up into all the pretty views. Monrovia Peak, San Gabriel Wilderness, Twin Peaks, Crystal Lake and it's surrounding peaks, Blue Ridge, Iron Mt and the grand finale- Baldy in alpenglow. Some of the forest burnt, but surrounding views so awesome, my vibe remained stoked. I've taken to freezing a beer and carrying it to defrost while i ride. Love having a cold beer to toast the sceanery an the coming descent into darkness. I run DiNotte lights (400 helmet lumens , 200 on the handlebar, 200 red flashing brightness in back). I doffed some warm layers, but the descending temps were chilly. I need to start expaning my horizons to Baldy Village and back, or up to ACH. gonna in due time.. .
I was off the hill and home by 5pm. And I was chilly even then. The views were in fact great. I was testing the waters to do the GMR-Baldy loop from the house. Shouldn't be much more than 50-60 miles. Maybe Thanksgiving day morning. The only real non-relaxing part was Lone Hill along the Wal-Mart/Sam's/Costco/Home Depot corridor. Ten years ago you could hit a golf ball down that street!
Mike, you have a route? link? gps? description? The only centuries I've done are flat ones near the beach and would prefer to ride some miles more local, which is even harder now with Hwy2 closed
