Crews Battle a Wildfire in Anaheim Hills


A brush fire scorched about 100 acres early Monday in the Cleveland National Forest east of the Anaheim Hills, but no homes were threatened.

Fighting the blaze were federal and state firefighters, along with firefighters from the Orange County Fire Authority, according to broadcast reports. Because of a Red Flag Warning in the Southland, many firefighters were pre-deployed in various areas. OCFA Capt. Stephen Miller said firefighters were preparing to stage an aerial assault on the blaze.

The Sheriff turned me around when I tried to ride into Black Star Canyon. Irvine Park is closed so I would think Santiago Oaks is to.

I guess the fire started near 241 by Blind and Freemont Canyons. And the Tecate Cypress forest tottaly burned! There are only 3 of these in the world it would be shame if it is wiped out. But that is how the seeds our spread through fire. But its a ways from the VQ coarse so hopefully it wont affect that.

I was driving west on the 60 from Ontario at about 5 pm and the smoke was all over the horizon. it made the sun and the sky look purple in color from my angle. sorry for not having a pic, since the sight of the immense smoke was incredible. hopefully to much doesn't get burnt out by Blackstar, riding in that type of moonscape is pretty bad.

I had no clue there was a fire till this afternoon. Down south (south oc) the skies were clear. I happened to look north, wow lots of smoke.

Hope all the trails are not toasted...

Looks like 1000 acres as of 5:30 pm. Looks to me like the fire is between Sierra Peak and the 241 tollroad. If it crosses the toll road, it could wipe out Wier Canyon regional park, a place I ride a lot and could also reach over to Irvine Park and Santiago Oaks. Not to mention a lot of new and rather expensive and huge homes. Hopefully the firefighters can stop it at the toll road.

Fire

I drove by on the 91 today at about 2:00 pm. Near the junction of the 241. You could see the flames burning within 100 yards of the 91. No firefighters in sight. I guess it makes more sense for them to be elsewhere to protect homes. Plus the freeway is a pretty good fire-break. I hope they get this thing out soon.

Good news as far as Vision Quest and Blackstar Cyn is concerned. This map shows that fire has stayed north of Blackstar.

the fire is now over 7000 acres and the Forest service doesnt expect to gain control of the fire till the 16th.

Here is the latest on the fire as of Thursday, February 9, 2006, 8 a.m.:

Acres burned: 8,743 acres;
Structures burned: None;
Reported injuries: Six minor injuries to firefighters;
Preliminary cause of fire: Escaped Prescription Burn;
Total firefighting personnel (all agencies): 2,190 Firefighters in 165 Engine Companies;
Air operations: 5 Fixed Wing Aircraft and 7 Helicopters;
Current condition: 41% Containment;
Estimated containment date: Saturday, February 11, 2006 at 6 p.m.;
Unusual conditions: Winds gusting up to 40-50 miles per hour and humidity around 10%.

Cool article in the OC Register today about the pros and cons of "controlled fires" to prevent wild fires. The men who did the controlled burns by Sierra Peak seemed pretty embarrased that it got outa control.

Atleast no structures or deaths occured, or this would be an even bigger controversy....

According to Cleveland National Forest website, all of the Santa Ana Mountain roads are closed north of Santiago Peak (Skyline, Main Divide, Maple Springs, etc.).

However, my experience is that this is is just giving car/truck access status, not hikers and bikers. For example, Blackstar is always shown as closed.

I did ride on Santiago Truck Trail and Luge tonight and it was open (and fun, although I did get a pinch flat on the Luge).
