No worries, there is a guy who rode the full 50 on a white frame fat bike with white shorts/jersey. I road with him for part of the return trip on the ridge line out and back.
anyone here have any feedback on one of these? http://www.carverbikes.com/bikes/obeast-bike Seems reasonably priced for a Ti framed bike.
( I have one.....it's a great bike(see post #90 in this thread). The geometry suits my needs well and I like the durability of ti frames. The rear end fits a 4.8 BFL on 100mm rims just fine.....and it *might* fit Bud/Lou if you really wanted to. The fork is great for snow but I would never, ever consider riding it on dirt. The manufacturer doesn't recommend using the forks for dirt use and it's obvious why once you ride one. That being said.....the fork is extremely light and comfortable for what I use it for. Here's a few photos of the bike. It obviously works well with a rack and bags....and has the requisite under the downtube bottle mount(key for carrying stove fuel when necessary) In Rohn, Alaska. One of the most incredible places I've ever seen. Outside of a bizarre motel at the Minnesota/Canada border. They must have found a bunch of red lightbulbs on clearance.
Brian, Is the carbon version of that fork more "trail worthy"???? Or just stick with the Steel fork and call it good?
The carbon version is supposed to be just fine for trail use. It's extremely light but people seem happy with it.
He is one of the best natural motors we have ever seen in the US ever, and you might see that signature model if he pissed off his sponsors enough with this appearance.
Manuel Beastly at Sea Otter in EVERY class - video is AWESOME! http://www.bikemag.com/news/news-fat-and-furious/
So who's the local fat bike wheel building Guru? I just picked up a set of holy Darryl rims, and I'm researching hubs now. Any of the local shops have a great fat bike wheel builder that you know of? (Orange County shops) That Carver looks awesome.
I'm gonna be lacing up a set of Clownshoes with ??? (haven't made a decision yet) hubs myself. You'd probably want to consult Brian (STR handle >> "donkey") at The Path bike shop regarding the fatbike hubs and building up those rims. I vote for Hope Fatsno's.
I have th carbon version on my Muk and it seems pretty good. Been all over all over Aliso and no challenges
Yup....we'd be happy to build those up for you. We've actually built quite a few fat wheels over the past few years. At your weight you could definitely save some weight and build with Comps or Supercomps(maybe even Revos). I'd also recommend the Hopes.......those are a great value and they perform. I'm building up a set of those myself(with Clownshoes). The other interesting option is the Paul/I9 rear hub. We can order those for you.....it's a Paul shell with I9 internals. That would be a great setup if fast engagement and bling is a priority.
well.....the STR Walmart fatbike fund was taking too long, so I went ahead and ordered one. It came last wednesday, and my hubby put it together before I got back from my work trip. Once the hand gets the OK I'm gonna take it out for a proper initiation, but so far its passed the dw parking lot test-ride. I'm pretty jazzed, and plan to white-trash it up as much as possible.
that bike looks like a bmx with an identity crisis. when's the STR fatbike coaster brake challenge at fully loop?
I don't know Kells, kinda reminds me of the fat bike tricycle I bought my kids back when they were young...
I'm SO down for this, been wanting to ride the loop on my beach cruiser. A few...more than a few of the UP-hills are GONNA suck donkey Ballz` - wondering if the beer will fly outta my basket? :?: Maybe this is best done on the slower Sunday morning ride. Beach cruiser is not quite a fat bike - but I'm fat, so that counts...right?
OMG I didn't know this is the same bike the lengendary manuel beastly rolled at sea otter! I have to have one!
I invite you to check out the mtbr fatbike forum if you're into the wallgoose bikes; lots of threads and pics showing what others are doing to them.
