Was at the JPL parking lot at 630PM. My fear now is if the fire continues to progress due east, it could drop into Upper Millard Canyon and climb up towards
Mt. Lowe and beyond. Lots of chaparral in it's path. Possible it could traverse over to Mt Wilson. Hope and pray not.

And yes, Josephine and Strawberry are also at risk. Possible some - or lots- of the upper Gabrielino has or will burn. Actually, if it is true much of this chaparral forest has not burned in decades, the fire could continue a long ways. As in Loomis Ranch, Mt Pacifico, yee gads. And the Big T portion is climbing Condor Peak, so nuthin but chaparral for miles between it and the desert...

I really feel for all of those who consider the Gabes their backyard.

    This is devastating.

This fire is a monster! I've seen the Gabes get hit before but this time its an explosion! The difference between my morning commute from Alhambra, to the bike shop in Arcadia, and what I could see at 1pm, just a few hours later, was incredible. Now they are saying the fire can be seen in Acton and Glendora.
    Ouch.

I can see it from Wildomar and even the Fallbrook Northbound grade into Temecula. If the fire gets to the towers, say goodbye to our favorite weather woman on channel 9.

    No Doubt!

I've lived here all my life (50+), and this by far the worst fire I've seen. Between 12:00 noon and 1:30 all hell broke loose on both ends of this fire. It's now just too big to fight.

Just got back from Chaney Trail and Loma Alta. Saw 30+ fire trucks roll up Chaney Trail. The Sunset Ridge-Mt. Lowe fireroad area appeared like it was going up in flames. :( The Merrill's are next. :(

The flames on the flanks of this fire are GIGANTIC. I hate to be a pessimist, but I really don't see anything stopping this massive fire anytime soon. It may burn back down to West Fork, Sturtevant Camp, the cabins in Santa Anita Canyon, Chantry and beyond the way things are going.

Sadly, I think Strawberry and Colby will probably get torched too. :(

This is really, really bad. It's very depressing and extremely sad. :( :( :( :(
I think I'll go cry now.

    Aw f*ck

I saved the below Tower Cam pic on photobucket (since it changes every 5 min..

Fire to the left of Mt Lowe is around Inspiration Pt. Left of Mt Markham is upper Grand Canyon. Right of Markham is upper ear Canyon, and alas, the big flare right of Disappointment Peak is Red Box or not far above it..

This fire is far worse that we thought and lots of prime terrain has and will burn

This sucks!!! Although I live in HB, I've come to love these trails, and ride there anywhere from once a month to twice a week. I've shuttled all those trails, as well as ridden from JPL up to the top of Middle Merrill, looped El Prieto...you get the picture. I think this may affect me more than the Whiting fire.

I know the peaks in this pic and this is devastating news! Fock!!!

edit: I just got back from taking the dog for a ride through the neighborhood (Arcadia area) and I could clearly see a long line of fire above what appears to be the Millard campground area! Wow!

Is this fire an accident or arson? I heard three individuals reported this fire as they entered a fire station with third degree burns they may have started it and tried putting it out.

Damn. I haven't been to the San Gabes in awhile. I kept meaning to go up there again..... but I keep hitting my local trails instead. This reminds me why I need to venture out more.

The trails will still be there. What happens is they are used by the Forest Service to fight the fire, and they get trashed by the rains that are sure to be coming...
