I just got a Motorola Droid and just have to say it is awesome! I have always wanted an Iphone but I don't want AT&T service. You may wonder why I should I post this on a cycling site? Well the apps are cool and theres one called GPS Track. So I tried it around Bonelli Park last night. Started it on the phone and put it in my pocket. When I was done I checked it out and it had everything I needed to know. It showed all the basic computer stuff plus had a map of our route on Google maps. Pretty slick!

If you click on the end link at the left of the map, it shows you the stats and elevation profile.

There is also another program called VeloX... i dont use em, as i have a garmin for cycling... but i agree, DROID rocks
 
Droid rocks nads?

Hella cool, any phone with the same OS (and GPS chip, which all now do by law) can run the app, never saw the need for a separate device with the same functions.:?:
 
Do you have to have the GPS enabled by the provider or can you use the existing locater in the phone?
 
I have one as well and I play with it so much more than my Iphone that I have.

It's definately a nicer than the iphone.
 
Go on...I'm looking for any reason I can to say so-long to AT&T. I'm even willing to cough up for the early term fee if the Droid really is that much better than the iPhone.

That's basically what keeps me from making a switch. I traveled 2,500 miles this weekend and basically only had voice coverage once I got out of LA (excepting a couple of major metro areas like Vegas, Colorado Springs, ABQ). Add to this that I use an AT&T data card for my laptop and I really need better 3G coverage. It's very hard to tell who is telling the truth.

I will say my first impression of the Droid was soured a bit when I asked the Verizon rep about music and he said "What music?" And then proceeded to tell me I could use Pandora. Ummm...
 
I dont have the Droid. I have the G1 but it has the same operating system and I love it!!! Its sooo awesome. I only have a few apps but they are great. Shazam is sweet. My Tracks is awesome when I'm riding or running. And the GPS rocks. Its helped on more than one occasion when I'm trying to find something close to wherever I'm at. I just type it in and it finds the one closest to my Lat and Long
 
Been running the G1 which feels a bit dated, but Android itself still rocks. Shazam, pandora, and the Gameboid emulator get the most use for me
 
I can't wait til the Iphone goes to Verizon, I know it will eventually. I played with the Droid the other day and it just can't compete with my Iphone. I was hoping maybe it would and maybe I would ditch AT&T. The sad thing is I have had AT&T and the Iphone for so long now it would pretty much take a miracle phone to get me to leave my combo. The droid is pretty cool but it's not as fluid as the Iphone, not as fast, not as much stuff for it yet either.
 
The only thing I am so far bummed with the Droid is the music player. I am a mac person and have used ipods/itunes for years. I have only had the phone for several days and have not gotten around to loading music into it but I know it won't be as simple as a ipod/iphone with itunes. Still, overall, I am very happy with the droid.
Anyone know if you can load courses from other riders like you can on the Garmin's ?

hard keyboard rocks....
the soft keyboard takes getting used to... just like an I phone did....

Droid is upgradeable in memory/storage space. I phone isnt
Droid you can swap the battery on. Iphone cant.
Droid has built in GPS with turn by turn spoken directions... Iphone dont!
Open source/open development...


The list goes on and on.

Some love iphones, and wont change OS's, some will.
 
I demod the droid and hated the keyboard. I was not to impessed by the hardware, but I guessed that since Motorolla has not made great phones for a while now.

Next years lineup of phones using the android OS are supposed to be better. Verizon is going to 4g (faster broadband) and next years phones are supposed to have a chip that takes advantage of faster broadband speeds.

The HTC made Google phone and the HTC phone(s) are supposed to be the ones to watch for.
 
You dont need upgraded memory on the Iphone because it already comes with more than the Droid can expand to.

I have never needed to swap an Iphone battery, mine has never failed and dont hear reports of others failing either.

Iphone has over 10 apps that have turn by turn talk to you GPS.

Open source = blahblahblah unlock the iphone theres your open souce.

all the what the iphone doesnt do commercials are such crap. lol

the ONE thing the Droid does the iphone doesnt is it comes with a built in flash. ill give u that.

LOL!! I did not want this to be a Iphone vs Droid thread but I new it would. I am just glad Verizon now has a great smart phone in it's hands. Can you imagine what the future phones are going to be like!?
 
I don't like the Motorola Droid but the HTC version looked pretty cool. I ended up getting a blackberry though, which is awesome :D

Agreed... I have the G1 and use the My Tracks app quite a bit. I volunteer as a Naturalist for the LCWP system and it is quite the kick to provide the people who go on the hikes the route they took with markers along the way to point out areas, features or animals we have come across. Another good Google application is Google Sky Map. Pretty cool, as my 7 year old uses it on clear nights to ID planets and stars.

I am looking to "trade up" in hardware...
