Cyclist hit and killed on Santiago Canyon Rd

How does one hit someone and take off from the scene? What the heck was this lady thinking? I hope they caught the right person.

"Gonzales fled the scene, according to the CHP. A short time later, she was arrested on suspicion of felony driving under the influence and felony hit and run."

They seem to always be loaded when they split the scene, same as the one on PCH in Huntington a year or so back...

Newport coast at PCH a year or so too...

This is terrible news. I never like seeing these. My heart goes out to Joey's family

This is so disturbing, my condolences to the friends and family of Joey for his untimely and unnecessary death. If you had to pick the safest time and day to ride it would be early Sunday morning....and I feel (felt) relatively safe on Santiago Cyn with its wide shoulder and limited cross traffic. :(

Such a tragedy!! At such a young age, it's very saddening. I can't begin to think how much his family is suffering, our condolences to his family.

Big No Bueno very sad to her. It seems like most of these deaths are people getting hit from behind by drunk drivers. Maybe instead of sharing the same side of the road it would be safe to let us see what is coming by riding facing on coming traffic.

I drove by the scene around 8:30. There four police cars out collecting evidence. It was at the top of dump hill going south bound. I love riding the canyon, but don't feel as safe anymore on the road.

so sorry to hear this. my sympathies to the those that suffered a loss of a relative and a friend. enough of this already. too many cyclist taken out these days. something needs to change.

Very sorry to hear of the loss, especially when it is something that could have been prevented by a little personal accountability. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

I would think the same too, but having friends in law enforcement and hearing stories, DUI/DWI in early weekend mornings are more common than you'd think as people who get drunk and pass out the night before wake up but are far from sober. Always be careful out there but it's a time I'd be a little more cautious than normal.

Not drunk... high on meth... I know people want drugs made legal... but I am glad in this case they are not... hopefully she is charged with 2nd degree murder. I know she is young and its sad, really, because she obviously did not intend to kill anyone, but she has to pay. I so wish that the County consider putting up K-rails (for cyclists to ride behind) at dangerous areas along the Canyon... I think this is the second or third death about the same place...
