This morning a friend of mine was hit and killed while riding his Road Bike on Santiago Canyon Rd by a hit and run driver. Joey worked with me at Two Wheels One Planet in Costa Mesa for about a year and was currently working at Jax in Irvine. He was 21. Joey was a really good road cyclist and one of the safest riders I know of. The woman who hit him fled the scene but we were told she was later caught. I don't have a lot of information about it right now but Joey will be missed. Be careful out there!

This is horrible and sickening. So sorry for his family and friends, including you Jeff. Truly horrible. Words fail me. Please drive carefully out there everybody. Can you imagine the pain you would feel if you hit a fellow cyclist?

Wow, I'm so sorry to hear that. My thoughts go out to you and the rest of his friends and family. I can't imagine what you all must be going through. "Tragic" doesn't even begin to describe it.

like everyone here, it's hard to hear about his happening again..but more so for those who knew Joey. Sorry to hear...thoughts and prayers for such a young person to be gone.

Such awful news. I hope she is caught and charged. So sorry for your loss. Prayers go out to his family.

It was just past the bridge to EOC heading into the canyon. Straight road with good sightline at that point.

Saw the OCSD & CHP out there when we went by about 9:45.

Sorry to read this. I very sorry for your loss. I'm shocked too--I love riding the canyon. Why are so many OC cyclists getting hit and worse, killed? I might be wrong but it seems to me from the accidents I've heard of that eastbound riders are the ones who get hit. Maybe those are all I've heard about. Bottomline, this is a tragic, sad thing.

I am so sorry for the loss of your friend. My prayers and thoughts are with his family. Take care

Arghhhh! My condolences go out to Joey and his family. RIP. Was Joey cycling alone when the accident occured?

These fatalities are happening way too often these days. As a result, my road bike gets very little saddle time. I'm debating whether or not to post it up for sale.

How does one hit someone and take off from the scene? What the heck was this lady thinking? I hope they caught the right person.

He was alone, and his mother told us went partially through the windshield so unless they found another person with a shattered windshield I think they got her.
