One of my buddies reports that the Forest Service has closed some trails at Hurkey Creek...sounds like Coyote Run Rd and something called "Hurkey Creek Climb" (I hope its not the Keen Camp Climb)

Apparently the closures are as a result of the forest service stating that the 24-hrs of Adrenaline events are having a negative effect on the trails.....Does anybody have any more information?

Sediment erosion is the new enemy of all legal open trails in the forest. Essentially the water districts are looking for money to dredge their reservoir's. The USFS is on our side and knows the value of the trail system to the community and public. Like all public agencies, they don't have any money, so closing the trails is their only way around a lawsuit until current impact reports can be completed.
I understand that the FS will meet this week with the water district to discuss the problems related to the Hurley Creek trail system.

Based on the responses to the thread that already address this issue, I don't think you're going to get any valuable info here, and would suggest calling both the

    USFS
    Idyllwild Ranger Station
    (909) 382-2921

    and

County of Riverside Hurkey Creek Campground
    Hurkey Creek
    56375 Highway 74
    Mountain Center, Ca 92561
    (951) 659-2050

I rode out there the other day, and have to say that I was a little disappointed in how much erosion I saw on the May Valley system after the little bit of rain they got they other day. If "the authorities" walk those trails I don't know what their reaction will be in regards to 'sedimentation.' The main problem is trail cupping. The water finds it way on the trail, and has no where to go but down it. They need to be debermed or some trails are going to become ravines. Not only that, people are going to start widening the trails by trying to avoid the erosion. I'm ready to spend a weekend up there to take action, but gotta get permission first.

Alvin Meadows held up much better perhaps due to more frequent grade reversals, and much lower horse traffic. In spite of that, May Valley can be remedied w/ a little love.

so, I'm headed up to Hurkey tomorrow evening to camp and hopefully ride a bit over the weekend. Does anyone have a map of
the closed trails? I can't find one online and I've never really gotten to know all the names of the trails.
For instance, are portions of the traditional 9-mile 24 HOA route closed? That's the route I'm most used to riding.
What would be suggested alternate routes/detours? I have also been down the missing link trail I believe.
Also, are there signs out there stating which areas are closed?

FWIW, The USFS website doesn't list any of the closures but I will be calling them tomorrow to find out more info.

If you have time, roll through the Hub Cyclery in Idy; they'll answer all your questions--and sell you a good cheap map.

Yes, Exfoliator was part of the 24 HOA. That was the trail you descended prior to making that sharp left hand turn and to begin "The 20 min climb" or straight which is Coyote Run, another trail being closed according to the article.

    Here's a link to a map

I assume coyote run is the road(ish) thing that you access through the gate at the end of the Coyote Run portion of the campground?
My family and I always hike up that a bit to access a big pool in the creek to wade in. If that is closed then that is a major bummer.

Yes Coyote Run is that trail you would take from the camp grounds after the gate instead of the left that leads you to Keen Camp Climb that is part of 24 HOA. That is what would connect you to the 20 Min Climb and onto Rage through Sage/Tunnel of Love instead of riding through Johnson Meadow/May Valley FR and Exfoliator.

Which part of the trail is Lower Exfoliator? Is the new best way to make a loop Keen Camp Climb -> Johnson Meadow -> May Valley FR -> Bonita Vista FR -> Missing Link -> Rage in the Sage -> Tunnel of Love? Since Upper and Lower Exfoliator are closed, I'm assuming the 20 Min Climb is no longer accessible?
