Today's Ride: Chantry/Wintercreek/Mt. Wilson DEATH CLIMB!
Total Distance: 12.1 miles (Felt like 30)
Total Climb: 2,581 feet (Felt like 25,000)
The Crew- Grandpa, SheClimbs, Henry, Vic, Slappy, SlowSpokes, Sprockethead, Dirtmistress, DStepper (aka Steppie), Pain Freak, Hanzo, StJunkie and Dino Brown

StJunkie and Steepie decided we should should try a route we had never done before- Chantry to Wintercreek to Wilson. Greeeeeat! What we were treated to was 2,400 feet of climbing in 4 miles. :( An entree of hike-a-bike was on the menu. Pretty tough.

Once at the top, we ate, drank, laughed and prepared for the narrow, chunky and technical roller coaster known as WILSON! I would say (while most trails in the SG's have narrow trails and steep drop offs), this is the one trail in the San Gab's that makes me nervous. In spots, the drops are straight down!!!! Almost forgot, we rode a few miles of pavement in order to return to our vehicles. Loved that part!!!!! Yes, it was downhill.

Just wanted to get the thread started. I will update my impressions.... route... miles... etc. as soon as the info arrives. Thank You for your time.....

Let's go... Were late!

Pain Freak being Pain Freak! :D

The Crew At Wintercreek

Pain Freak- 150 mile road ride one week... Death Climb the next!

My Hero's... Steppie, StJunkie and Pain Freak

STR's Living God (Steppie) with She Climbs

We made it- 2,400 feet in 4 miles (or less)

Grandpa- I came here to descend!!!! Well... :?:

Why are we smiling? It's time to ride the roller coaster- that's why!!! :D

Hanzo in the chunk

Sprockethead in the chunk

A "baby" dropoff....

Pain Freak.... Steeper than it looks...

Good stuff, great people, great trail. No wind.

We seemed to have a few crashes but I do not think anything serious. Little trail side repair on Andy's bike and we were good to go. I only stopped twice to take pics, so just a couple from me and the GPS ride profile. As usually there are discrepancies between the GPS unit and my mapping software, I have no idea which is more accurate…hopefully somewhere in between the two. The numbers sited by Dino where from the unit

Looks like you all had a great time. Boulders the size of cars, exposure, 4 miles of hike-a-bike.... no thanks!

What else is there to say that hasnt already been said? Great trail, great weather, very nice people and

Steppie got air and I have witnesses!

Nice to have met Lynn, Liz, Vic, Nick, Henry, and the infamous Pain Freak.

Steppie - What about the new bike?

It is so nice to be able to pedal through rock gardens without pedal strikes...love the high bottom bracket. Love the RIP but it is not a rock crawler. The bike feels alot like my old 5-Spot until I drop the seat and head downhill. I wish I had the skills to push it but the bike makes the downs and gnar less scary.

In short...excellent bike. Not to heavy 33.24lbs. Climbs as well as my 5-Spot not as good as the RIP

What a ride today! Great to meet Grandpa, SlowSpokes, Sprockethead, Dirtmistress, Hanzo and Dino Brown.

The climb was a burner but I'd do it again. :)

Next time, point me to the shuttle on this ride. The DH was freakin' awesome, when we doing this again? Nice meeting Nick (awesome rider), Liz (Dirtmistress), Vic, and Enrique. Everyone else, good to see you again, I always like hitting up new dirt, the HAB was pretty halacious. Mike, I don't know how you could have enjoyed that.

Onto the photos:

I know Dino wants one!

I didn't realize what a great time we had till I was driving down the freeway and noticed to myself that I was smiling. I sure hope none of the passerbys noticed. We had a really good group with very similar riding abilities (well except for Good Ol Sloppy, and STJunk). Although there are a lot of similarities to the trails in the San Gabes they almost all have their own distinct personality. Mt. Wilson trail is still my favorite. I'm not sure why, but I love this trail. This is one of the most beautiful trails you'll find in the San Gabes, but it is also one of the most treacherous. It's real difficult to be looking around when the penalty for a miscue would almost certainly mean a looooooooooong trip down. I'm not sure you'd be able to stop till you hit bottom. The sides are unlike a lot of the other trails we ride, in that these are more like on the sides of cliffs. Riding with Sir Dino, Steppie, and the other cast of characters is always a lot of fun. I especially like how easy Sprockethead made that final switchback coming in Orchard Camp look so easy. I have a new tattoo in the back of my leg where I didn't make it. I'm pretty happy with what I accomplished today. Riding to much road and my skill level has diminished quite a bit, but it's coming back. I only rode 88 miles yesterday and 150 last weekend, so I am scaling it back some.

Great ride people! What's next???

Major kudo's to Liz for all her retries, that trail wasn't going to own her!
Hope the ankle doesn't hurt to bad, that was a big knot on there.

Nice summary Freak. Yeah, the amount of exposure we saw today is something I have not seen on any other local trails; making me wonder....when do we go again? :)

You know it's an awesome trail when we all agree it was a nasty climb up, and challenging with tech and lots o' exposure on the way down and we all can't wait to do it again!
