Chain Guide?

I was wondering what this thing really does for you. Is it really necessary or is like and extra toy u can show off to your peoples? I'm pretty sure there's a big reason for it but can I live w/out it? My bike is freaking heavy as it is so is this thing gonna make a difference? Any help would be great thanks.

That chain guide is for a single front chainring system (ie. downhill set up). Unless you are dropping your chain or have a lot of chainslap you don't need a guide. I use a guide on 2 of my bikes, they are very nice when set up properly and you don't even know it is there.....until you don't hear your chain clanking around and falling off

chain guides are great...however if you love your granny gear get a guide that is compatible with 2 chain rings, on that nore you will lose your top end . i am running a 38th black spire ds-1 on my banshee chappy and i ride up and down the loop,whiting pretty much anywhere that my legs can take. where i have noticed it the most is pedaling on the rock gardens and rough stuff...no slip of the chain...one less thing to think about

I've been debating on getting one too (as FXRob knows) The only time I seriously ever use my big ring is when you exit out of the Luge and head back down towards Cooks on the asphalt road. Actually I also do put my chain up into the big ring when descending very bumpy singletrack too. :-k

You won't need to put your chain in the big ring when going down Rock-it/steps/luge/T&A...etc with a chain guide. I'd say get a Heim arm and an MRP roller and do it. It will cost you about $70 or so, you'll love it....and I've got a roller you can buy off me.
