Bommer and Shady Canyon MTB Ride

We’re having another MTB scheduled ride in the Bommer and Shady Canyons in the Irvine Open Space Preserve South.

We will have two separate group rides: (Easy/Moderate) and (Advanced) for the morning. Both rides will have some hills, but the advanced ride will probably require some hike-a-bike steeps.

If interested on riding with us that morning, please pre-register for the ride at www.irvineopenspace.org and follow the instructions under “Programs and Events” to register.

See ya on the 3rd.

Thanks

You leading this event Adam?

A docent-lead ride into normally closed habitat sounds like a birthday-weekend ride that a mountain biking ecologist would dig. :bang:

How crazy is the "advanced" ride? Are we talking full body armor and take out an extra insurance policy? Or more like "better than average MTB handling skills" required?

I'll be taking the advanced group out.

Sorry.....second half of your question. No body armor stuff but some climbs that top out at around 36% incline (hike a bike for most), some nice tight single-track, and hard-packed ranch roads with plenty of climbing and descents.

Phenominal scenery also.............it's a pretty pristine area ecologically speaking.

It looks like it's 08:30 to ~11:00.

I was having some trouble with the online reg, so I faxed my reg in.

On the phone they told me it was free, even for non-Irvine Residents? :bang:

Yeahh I faxed my registration in the other nite. So hopefully Ill have my pin number and the other info by sat.

If not Im just gona show up and bring the forms filled out just in case.

nothing like new trails \:D/

What if it rains tomorrow?

Moderate to heavy rain would cancel the ride since some of our trail surfaces have a nice clay content that is prone to ruts.

If it rains, I will check the check the trails out early Saturday and make the determination at that time.

It's a good bet though that if it's raining overnight on Friday, the Saturday event will be cancelled.

Basically if the gate closed Saturday morning with Cancellation sign, the event is off....................if the gate is open, the event is on.

It's always a catch 22................we need and want rain, but just not on or near the weekends #-o

texlepomis and I have a 'plan B' if it were to rain. We'll head up Santiago TT or some other trails in the mountains that handle rain better. But lets hope 'plan B' does not come into action [-X

Only 8 spots left after I signed up; if you want to go, get on it.

I too have a "Plan B" in case of rain. I can't say much here, only that it has something to do with beer, USC, UCLA, my garage, a trampoline, a donkey, and pudding. :-$

Just kidding of course. Won't be anywhere near my garage.

See you Saturday!

Any update on trail conditions?

Right now it's still up in the air and up to nature.

If we get rain overnight it will probably be too wet to ride the trails (not any nice DG in the park, but quite a bit of clay soil).

I'll be out at the park at first light to check on the conditions and will post a notice on the front gate if it's too wet.

Hopefully the rain will pass us by and we can ride [-o<

Yeah Adam, a highly enjoyable ride! Can't wait 'till the next one! All you cats that didn't ride today will have to venture out there next time!

And don't I feel like a fool...my "mysterious" brake issues were my own fault! Although that isn't a big surprise! :?: All those crazy zip ties caused a pinch in the rear brake line! #-o Just because I left a little too much housing on the derailleurs...but the good news is that it was an easy fix and everything's trimmed properly and seems to be working smoothly.

And I gotta give a cheers to Ladera Cyclery for loaning me that rear wheel so I could ride this weekend! :bang:

...off to the other tread to see what the deal is for tomorrow...
