I was scheduled to do a IRC group ride at Baker Canyon on Sunday, but weird events led me to another Black Star ride.
My nav diverted me to the 261 toll road, which is unusual, but I figured it was leading me around an accident or delay or something. The toll road was wildly foggy, I could barely see 50 feet ahead for most of it, and at one point a bird eating something flew up too late right into my windshield. Ugh. At the Santiago Canyon exit I still could not see anything and somehow ended up getting on the 241 toll road which meant I was not going to make my start time. After some redirecting, I finally found Black Star trailhead, which was amazingly bright and sunny where is was super foggy less than 5 miles away. In the parking lot, some woman about 50 yards away and in full view dropped her pants and bent over at the waist to pee, LOL. I mean, squat between cars maybe? B* is always weird.
Since I had missed my ride, I settled on going up Black Star to 2 Monkey's. Climbing B* is super boring to me, but I do enjoy all the singletracks on the way down. Puhu Connector also adds some enjoyment to an otherwise boring climb. I did not have the energy to drop 2 Monkey's and go back up to Booby Trap, so just settled for that one. 2M is super loose and steep in some spots, but other than that is a really fun trail. See vid below if you want to see the full length of it. Interesting that they don't seem to be doing too much work on the fork to the end of 2 Monkey's. It was super overgrown and I was very cautious because I could not really see the trail and it has had some diabolical ruts in the past.
After 2 Monkey's, I rode the "B* B-line" which is really all one singletrack that crosses the fire road twice into Hidden Trail. Most people skip Hidden Trail because it is too much for them, but I enjoy it. I can't fathom why anyone would take the entire fire road down when the singletracks are so fun, but to each their own.
So, at the end I salvaged a fun ride.
