Bike Snobs

Sad to say, there are snobs everywhere, too bad for them!!!

FWIW I have noticed that when mountain biking, only about 20% of the riders acknowledge my "hello, how are you today, etc." I guess I forgot to shower. :?: Self-absorption seems to rule the day. :-(

you gotta get further from "civilization". essentially people suck, but they suck more when there is more of them!

To the OP,

Was it a guy riding a Moots and sporting a matching Moots kit? Let's get that foo!

That foo has no tact, no style, no skills and way too slow. Poser of all posers! Get him......careful though, he's known to rip a few that could clear out a stadium!

Maybe it was this guy???...

Oh yeah, Shudder, tell them about the warm greeting we got from the peloton on Saturday!

Ha! Yeah, well -- as I've read through this thread, that experience certainly has entered my mind. I don't wanna take this thread in a completely different direction, but in short, Few and I came down a great section of the LV View Trail to Las Virgenes Blvd. on Saturday morning, like gorillas in the mist! As I was waiting for Few to come down, a pelloton of about 25 riders went by on LV. I whistled and waved and shouted hello but NOT A SINGLE ONE OF THEM acknowledged my presence (and it was no hammerfest). That just cracked me up! Really? No love for the lone mountain biker waving hello? Whaaaa?

A moment or two later, just as Few arrived, a pursuit group of riders -- about 15 of them this time -- rolled by and I waved and whistled again. Nothing. Nada. Zilch. Mebbe they were too tired trying to catch up to the other slow moving group ahead of them...).

Finally a set of five or six much slower riders rolled by and when I whistled, waved and yelled hello (and by this time I was laughing cuz I just couldn't get any love out of this troop at all), one lone woman gave a small wave (but I don't think she really meant it). But, at least that was something. Jeez!! (And know this -- I don kit and ride my 2001 Titus HCR during lunchtimes during the week while I'm at work -- I ain't proud! To paraphrase TKblazer, I'm a freakin' roadie!!!).

To the OP -- a bummer getting dissed, but you've got a lot of support here.

And to thistrailisntlegal? -- I'm bummed for you being laid in for so long. Hopefully you will find work soon. As to talking about something as insignificant as getting dissed on the trail when so much important stuff is happening in the world, well, really, we could do that all the time, what with the economy, global warming, Haiti, Pakistan, Iraq, Afghanistan and ____________ (you fill in the blank) making headlines, there is hardly a good moment to be had out there. So, we talk about other stuff. And that's okay. Right?

whenever i pass a big dude suffering on a climb i always try to offer words of encouragement. they see my skinny ass speed by and don't know that not so long ago i was the fat dude barely cranking along. i hope it doesn't sound condescending because it is heart felt, anyone can make the change.

Haha, I've seen 1x1clyde pass skinny dudes on a climb and rub his belly.

One of the best ones I had was a couple of years ago. I spend most of my time on the road bike but decided to do the Claremont park for fun. So i rode up to the top of the climb and took a little break there. Sitting on my top tube having a drink and looking out over the city's. Some guy on a big bouncy bike rolls by me and says "maybe next time you can afford some gears" I have a spot SS, steel frame and at the time I think it was rigid up front. It is a great bike, nothing fancy but also nothing cheap. I proceeded to catch the guy on the next rise over, as I rode by him I just said "guess I dont need gears to pass you" and continued on my nice ride.

Back in the early to mid 90's it seemed like everyone on the trail was nice. Say hi or at least a little hand wave. I still try to do that as much as I can. But now i notice less and less people doing it back to me. Oh well... that is life i guess.

I also agree with you. In my experiences for every 10 greetings I give out I get 3-4 greetings returned. There's this one a-hole I constantly run into at Sycamore Canyon-Riverside. He's about 55 years old and a real good rider. The first two times I saw him I said hello and he just looked at me and give me a dirty look and rode on. This dude is just begging...

Could it be this guy ?

Never rides anywhere else.

Very interesting...I ride and also run. When I encounter runners on the trail, whether I'm passing, being passed or meeting them, we always acknowledge one another, but when I ride, I encounter the same indifference most of you have. I used to greet fellow bikers when I first started riding, but over the years I've accepted the fact that common courtesy is forgotten at the trail head.:-k

It's a regional thing, or city/country difference. I find about 90% ack. On the weekends the rate drops as the trails get more crowded.

That's odd.. :-k My experiences has been the polar opposite. Out of 20 people maybe 2-3 don't respond and it's usually because they have an Ipod on. The thing is though I don't feel the need to engage every one I see. If someone is in their own little world and obliviouse to the out side world or looks just plain unfriendly, I wont even bother trying to greet them.

Wow great post!! I am so glad I found STR most of my rides before this group were with tools blasting ahead of the slower riders etc.....I started riding for my health and to have fun? I come across these guys all time it's creepy they don't speak...ride up on you without a word and bitch when you don't move for them? Then thank god for the group ride I went on with the STR gang!! Fun groofing around guys getting put on the hot seat joking just a fun time it's what riding for me is all about. My crew now are loads of fun one more fun than the other we have great rides and big supporters of STR and it's what riding is really about @ the end of the day....wow that was a bit windy!! Cheers

So I'd been riding for about 2 months around my neighborhood on a $90, 10 year old Target bike. Decided to upgrade to a 38 lb Mongoose $169 Walmart special for a race my 12 year old son talked me into in Central California.

We had no clue what we were getting into, and learned what mountain biking was all about. Got the requisite odd looks, as we jockeyed at the start line. I rode with my son for the Kid's lap which was after the adults took off. Left him near his finish line, then since I'd paid 35 bucks for the privilege of being out there, I was going to finish the race!

Coolest moment was riding (slowly) up the last hill, while a dude on a $3,000+ bike was walking his bike up the hill. Passed him and beat him to the finish line.

It's the attitude, not the price of the bike. So ride, have fun, and laugh off the snobs.

Jeff

whybother: please don't give any words of encouragement to fat and slow (me x2) riders. Its like telling a cancer patient that they will pull through.
When I rode my 42lb Stinky up Brown Mtn during the hot summer, skinny jackasses would pass me and say--"almost there, don't give up"
Well mother focker, I"ve only ridden this thing 20,000 times---STFU. I've actually said that a couple times. (made a lot of friends---lol screw that)
Words of encourgement from other riders speeding by would be: If you see me at the top, I'm gonna give you this bike free!

Or a least a beer!

Haaa, great story. I'm totally the guy with a $5,000 bike and $50 worth of skills (at least climbing) but whatever. I'm always the guy that stops and will chat (an excuse to BREATHE) and help fix a bike as I'm a pretty good mechanic.

I get heckled quite a bit because of my lack of uphill skills. Most people with my "disability" wouldn't even ride though. Bottom line, is I HAVE LOTS OF FUN! My good friend that I ride with smokes me even on the downhills on a hardtail. The trick I learned is to be the guy that drives, so everybody has to wait for me anyway.

Again, great story. However, my experience on the local trails is almost 100% positive. Most folks I run across are nice and friendly.
