Bike Snobs

Come on now....

A person is defined by the bike they ride. I ride a 5* because I deserve it, it's what makes me what I am. Better then you! You freekin people on these low end Kona, Surly's and Rocky Mountains need to get real. Buy a Turner or a Ellsworth. Until then us real mountain bikers will never accept you.

Just keep riding, when you have been riding long enough you get past the whole bike worship crap and it doesn't even register anymore. The point of nirvana is when you pass somebody pushing their $5000.00 bike up a climb and you sincerely tell them "nice bike"

That was great what you told those tools as you passed them +1 for airone1!!:clap:Some people take mtn. biking way to serious, and its mostly guys in the spandex sporting a Ninja Toe. They pass you with no expression they don't even give you a nod or acknowledge you, and they don't seem to be enjoying themselves its all business. It doesn't matter how much your bike cost what matters is that your having fun with your friends and just getting out on the trails and riding.

not into friend making, into bike riding
You're a funny man Ernie!

And what are you riding now? Are you going to tell me you haven't upgraded?

Back in the 90's and early 2000's on the website, mybikesite.com, practically everyone on that site was a bike snob.
Perhaps because the sport was still in sorts of its infancy... many riders on that site (who are now on this site) used to persecute me about my diamondback, mongoose, schwinn and other bikes that i owned. The thing about it now is that those riders are now old & in their 40's and the bikes that they used to cherish is an old
tech pile of crap now.

example: raise your hand if you drool over a 4" travel Blur, ellsworth truth or 5" travel stinky with v-brakes

Bike snobbery sucks. It will still exist and keep on existing long after we're all dead. More so with the damn roadies and their lust for Dura Ace & carbon fiber. Keep on riding.
They picked on you because of your posts, not your bikes. That came latter.

I sort of had a similar experience at T.B. They kinda looked down on my Surly SS until I passed them on the up hill TWICE! But when loading up one guy just couldint help him self he had to mention there was at least $40 grand sitting in the back of the truck.......WHAT!?!? It was ONLY three bikes and they were not even blinged out...... I just smiled and said " $200 bucks and the parts came from my old bike." and loaded my cheap bike in my 97 POS Jeep and smiled knowing I've got no payments on either! RIDE ON MY FRIEND!!!!!!

I think snobbery is more an attitude than a dollar figure. For instance, people who can't afford to be car snobs choose to be snobs in other areas instead. It stems from a basic desire to look down on others. It's one of the ugly sides of human nature.

Even if you've dumped tons of cash into your bike always gonna be someone with a more expensive bike. If you're fast there's always gonna be someone faster.

The whole scenario reminds me of the Dr. Seuss book "The Sneetches."

I'm not sure what I'd say to an announcement like that...maybe "congratulations." Dunno.

I'm Few. And I'm a bike snob.

I look down on everyone who didn't get as good a deal on their bike as I did.

I get passed by almost everyone.

But I have more fun riding than almost everyone.

Oh yeah, Shudder, tell them about the warm greeting we got from the peloton on Saturday!

Uhhhh...where does the 250lb a$$ comment come into play here? I guess that seemed out of the blue, and I take offense as one of the uber clydes on here. I just don't get the association. I guess the $300 bike guys and the big dudes both catch their share of crap.

+1 not an "uber-clyde" but a clyde nonetheless.

My bike is 8 years old but still keeps up with some kids riding kona Stabs and Stinkys (not andrew, hes got mad skills). Haven't got much crap for it though because it still looks pretty badass imo. Its not the bike its the rider as proven by my friend Andrew who can ride circles around most guys on his half broken Giant Trance with half its normal travel.

The kind of bike doesn't matter as long as you're having fun. I think that's a given in this crowd.

There are also a number of people on lower-priced bikes with attitudes - or chips on their shoulders, so to speak - when they beat someone with a more expensive bike (I didn't sense that attitude from the original poster - I'd have probably done the same as he did).

My wife, for example, rides a very nice bike. In fact, she has a couple very nice bikes. She started out on a nice bike so she doesn't really know the difference, anyway. I'm sure there are some people who pass her on the climbs or on the DH (even when she's on her SlopeStyle) and feel good that they passed a woman on an expensive bike - but really, so what? My point is that one shouldn't judge a person by their bike - whether it be inexpensive or expensive.

As the OP said, he's living within his means. I think that's the right thing to do. I've seen a number of people go into considerable debt buying expensive bikes - I think that's stupid, regardless of bike riding skill.

Anyhow...I haven't always ridden nice bikes, and it certainly is a good feeling knowing that it's not just the bike that makes the ride. And even now that I have some nice bikes, the one that gets the most trail use is an old steel hardtail that I built up in 2003.

Screw the snob bastards. If they piss you off just slap them silly. You want to see a bunch of snobs then go to the CX races. It can get very bad. Its hilarious.

Those guys are jerks and good for you for passing them. I regularly ride up Chantry road. I love riding up that road, because few of the roadies down below go up it. And the ones that do go up it, usually give me a thumbs up for rocking the climb on an 85 Bridgestone 400. I noticed that there are fewer snobs on the harder rides, white saddle, Chantry, Hwy 39 to Crystal Lake. It's like we are all suffering up there and no one cares.

Honestly, it is why I like being a big guy, 6'2" 260 lbs and can climb, even if it is snail pace at times.

If you are out somewhere on Red Box Rincon, you are a baddazz of some sorts in my book

Carbon fiber frame= $2500.00
Super wack-a-do components= $1000.00
tricked out cycling kit= $300.00

Getting owned by someone on a $300.00 bike on a climb= PRICELESS

Uh, do you live in America? 'Cause it buys a WaveRunner. Have you ever seen a sad person on a WaveRunner? Have you? Seriously, have you? Try to frown on a WaveRunner. You can't! They're so awesome, it's just throttle. People smile as they hit the pier. - Daniel Tosh

Yeah...so you'd feel really awesome passing my wife on her expensive bike on a climb? Good for you.

See, there are tools on both sides of the shed.

I'm a native Californian, but moved back to this californication population unwillingly from Colorado, this states reputation is all about image. STR members I have encountered have been pretty humble.

You know the very first road sign coming into California is a boob job doctor adverstisment.

That snob you encountered must have had an inferiority complex and has to ride a glam bike to hide his true weakness.

Sad to say, there are snobs everywhere, too bad for them!!!

FWIW I have noticed that when mountain biking, only about 20% of the riders acknowledge my "hello, how are you today, etc." I guess I forgot to shower. :?: Self-absorption seems to rule the day. :-(
