I have a Honda Pilot with a 2" Trail Hitch. I've been dragging my bike around the back but with all of this mud I think it would make my wife much happier if I bought a bike rack. I've heard that the best ones out there are the platform racks. The Thule runs almost $400. Is it worth it or would I be okay with this Swagman from Amazon for $138?

Roof rack! I've never been a fan of hitch racks when there are other choices. I also like the quality of Thule. The Swagman looks pretty good. My question is it beefy enough with two bikes on it?

Platform racks are great. Less hassle than putting a bike up on the roof. Thule and Yakima are pretty over-priced for what you get IMHO. If you're going to spend $400, checkout the Kuat racks. They are very well designed and extremely strong. Lot's of cool features like hide-away cable locks, etc. If you need to save dollars, the Swagman looks acceptable to me. Just make sure you consider what you need to do to access/open your hatch both with bikes mounted and without.

I got a Thule T2, hands down the best bike rack available. does not ever touch your frame, secure, and lockable. a bit pricey but well worth the price in my opinion.

If u have the money I would go with the thule racks. You can so much with this rack.
Surf board, travel, bikes ect. I have a set of Thules that are 10 years old and are still going strong. If u look around u can find some deals. Craigslist, eBay. Can save u a few buck. But worth every penny and will last a long time. I just bought a new rack set with bike trays for my Mercedes and am very happy. The other 10 year set is on my westfalia.
Cheers

+1 on the Thule T2. It is pricey, but it is also indestructible, expandable to carry four bikes, and securely carries everything from road bikes to downhill bikes. (And if you do much freeway driving with bikes on your car, a hitch rack won't kill your MPG like a roof rack will.)

A Honda Pilot is pretty tall for a roof rack. I would go with the Hitch mount unless you surf or kayak etc.
then the roof mount may make more sense.

If you have some patience, the $400 racks go on sale for 20% off ($320) every now and then if you shop around.
REI will put out a 20% off coupon within the next month or two with their annual dividend and sale.

I own the T2 and have found that it is my favorite so far. I have tried the Kuat and Saris, and have had a good look at the Yakima and Sportsrack hitch racks. They all have there upsides, but for versatility and longevity the T2 wins hands down. Ultimately, they all end up in a similar price point for the nicer racks. Save your money on going for the cheaper racks, and then wanting to upgrade later. If you want to come check some out you can come by Jenson USA in Riverside. Several of us have the T2 on our vehicles, but there is usually a Saris and a couple of Sportsracks on various employees' cars, and I'm pretty sure that we have the Yakima sitting in stock in our warehouse right now. That way you can get up close and see why one rack may work better for your needs and your vehicle over another.

I have the Xport version of that same rack on my Jeep Patroit...have had it there for 3 yrs and access the hatch of my jeep regularly....why spend $400 when you can spend $140?
I have had zero issues w/ it and thousands of miles of road trips on it not to mention bunjeed my snowboards to it....T2 is a very good rack but also a heavier rack w/o bikes on it....

I was looking into that same Swagman before I picked up my Thule Roadway hitch rack (hanging type). If you get a platform rack, just be sure to secure the rear-most bike with an extra strap to the post. I had a friend whose front bike tire went flat while he was driving. The flat gave the bike enough clearance to drop below the rack's frame grip arm and sure enough his bike fell over on the fwy. I've seen another version of the Swagman (but perhaps from a different manufacturer) with a spring loaded frame grip arm, so that might be worth looking into as well.

By the way, the rest of my friends all use the hanging type hitch racks and haven't had any problems. Just make sure your frame and friends' frames will fit over the cradles (I couldn't get mine to fit on the Thule Ridgeline cradle). In the worst case, I've also seen people use frame adapters successfully: http://www.google.com/images?q=bike...&source=og&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi&biw=1680&bih=935

I think a hitch mount would be more practical than a roof rack for the pilot like others have said. From my experience, the thule t2 platform hitch racks work good and are pretty well constructed. Don't have any experience with the swagman, but it seems to be well reviewed on amazon. At that price its worth taking a chance on it.

Carried two DH bikes on my Thule T2 (on Audi wagon) up to Canada and back. The trip included some mildly rough dirt roads. Flawless performance. A little tough dropping the loaded rack out of the way to open the liftgate, and tougher yet lifting them back into position. My wife couldn't do it, but I managed to drop and lift them probably 50 or more times. Don't forget to put the pin back in after you lift them into position.

I have 2010 Honda Pilot. I have tried the roof rack and the hitch rack option. I would say that the hitch rack is the way to go. The Pilot is really tall to get a bike up there, you would need to bring a small step stool. I have the running boards too and they didn't cut it. I'm about 6' tall.

Now having said that...I now own a T2 rack which has been nothing but awesome. You can get a swag or sport rack, but make sure you get a rack that is 2 inch. I don't suggest getting a rack that has a 2 inch adaptor. The way the Pilot hitch is designed, it doesn't play well with the adaptors. I had a sportrack with the adaptor and after a month, the adaptor was falling apart. The hitch of the Pilot would cut into it.

The T2 is more expensive, but I think for the money it is worth it. You are going to going to put a 3 grand bike on it and be traveling on the freeway. I want to make sure my bike to be safe and secure. My buddy has a sportrack and the other day on the freeway, when I was following him, the outside bike clamp came loose and the bike was dangling off the rack. If it wasn't for the straps that tie down the tire, the bike would have ended up on the freeway under my car.

As far as security...the T2 comes with the Hitch lock and locks for the carriers. Other carriers might not come with that...so figure in another 50 dollars or so onto the price. I also went down to the hardware store and made a cable with loops at the both ends as an extra precaution. I just weave it through the bikes and then use the hitch lock to lock it up.

If you look around you can get the T2 for a reasonable price. Use ebay bucks and ebates. I got my T2 rack new for 300 dollars shipped to my door on ebay.

I'm really surprised at the "waste of money" comments when it comes to securing anywhere from $2000-$10000 worth of bicycles to a vehicle. IMO, $400 is WELL worth it, if it does the job. This is not a place to be cheap. Especially if you consider that a good rack will set you back about half the cost of a decent fork.

second the raxter rack. i have a single bike version for my tsx and odyssey....love it. light, cheap and holds the bike in place. you can't loose.

they are very simple in construction and work well, read the mtbr reviews. if you want something with more "bling", get a 1upUSA rack, the same thing is a raxter but made with lots of alu.
