RR:Big Sur- Nor Cal

I went to Big Sur a while back, to go to a big BBQ meet with some friends in Monterey. I left a day early to check out Big Sur. The drive is awesome(the second half), I took the 5 all the way up and then took the 46 to PCH. 46 is a long straight road with no traffic except for commercial trucks. On the way back I took the interstate 58 back to the 5, very twisty long road. Looked like there would be nice riding and camping through there.

The fireroad is Coast Rd Starting at the north end of Andrew Molera State park. No adventure pass needed if you park at the base of the fireroad.

The first two miles are uphill, pretty steep fireroad, I could ride some of it, but most of it was walking uphill pushing my heavy IH SGS.

After the two mile climb you get two miles of shaded, downhill :D

Semi dense forest, very refreshing to get out of the sun.

Sorry for the crappy pics, they were on a disposable :o

The downhill only last's so long though and the second climb was much more grueling than the first. Even steeper fireoard climbing, this time longer with tight switchbacks.

But after the long climb you get another 4 miles of VERY dense forest decent.

towards the end of the fireroad, coming back up to pch there is a short climb. You get a very cool view of this old bridge, built in 1938.

The fireroad drops you right onto PCH near the bridge. This is a shot of the bridge about 50 yards away on coast fireroad.

When you cross the street there is a nice vista point.

From here you can do the fireroad again as an out and back, but I decided to get some road riding in on the 40+lb freeride bike #-o

There was some VERY great views though and I'm glad I went back that way.

You also pass by Point Sur Lighthouse which is open to the public.

Great pics and a nice ride report! My wife and I went up to Big Sur 3 years ago for our honeymoon and I did a little bit of riding up there. Sure is some bitchin scenery up there! The drive on PCH is just awesome, both the views and if you like driving twisty roads there is plenty of that :D

Rob good shots except that last one\\:D/ . I went up there 4 years ago or was it 5? Anyways I'm itching to get back up there and ride some more.

oh man, I was loving the drive up PCH. This truck handles like a sports car, very fun.

The ride kind of sucked I wish I would have known a better place to ride.

Ha!

Let me know when you go, I'm always down for Nor Cal trips.
