That's my birthday--I thinks I be going. I'm opting for the metric as everyone I know is doing that one. EDIT: I just signed up. Looks like a fun event!
I did it last year, but am not signed up for it this year. It was pretty warm but still a good event. The pit stops were well stocked and volunteers helpful. I may pull a buddy of mine along the last 40 miles or so.
I'm seriously considering riding the 100 mile route. Looks interesting - last month I did 80 miles of it in the other direction with 5,000 feet of climing. Good prep for the Cool Breeze in August.
A bunch of us Path people are in for the metric century. I think I'll be dumb and borrow a SS road bike.
I could possibly be up for the double metric. It will be my last big ride before starting to train for Avalon 50miler.
Kudos! Seems like it should've had more, I did the OC Gran Fondo which seemed like a mellower route than this one and it had about that elevation. I saw the Big Ring seemed to look for every major climb in Orange/Anaheim Hills as a warm up to Santiago Canyon--looked pretty tough.
I only took a couple of pictures on the ride, figured I'd add them for the heck of it. It was tough only in that I didn't do anything to prep for it, and that we didn't do any real climbing until mile 40 or so. And then, after mile 82...Stonehill Drive/Avenue/Road... Doesn't look like much, but a half mile of up to 15% grade at that point is more than it seems. And then, after 91 miles or so...Crown Valley Parkway. From the top, after the climb, at the last rest stop. Other than that, it was a piece of cake.
I did the 62 and it was fun considering I soloed the last 22 miles (just slightly demoralizing). I was fighting off leg cramps on and off down Portola to Irvine Ave and Bake to the finish. The ride was well organized, well supported, and the BBQ lunch afterwards was super delish with second helpings freely offered (the first was so generous, that's all I ate). The price also included a jersey and a Jax gift card, so it was a killer value. And the proceeds supported WorldVision, a group that helps get care and food to kids in need globally. I'll be back next year. I highly recommend this ride.
I'm really impressed with people who did this ride, and who are able to ride these long distances. How did people train for this? Being new to the road discipline, I'm very interested in how you build up to this level. Is the preparation all riding, or do you incorporate other types of workouts too?
