Better of the 2 bikes for So. Cal. terrain? Help sway me!

They price their bikes in such a way that makes buying the frame less of a bargain.

In any case the rear shock will need to go. Ur 36 with the floatx should complement wuite well.

No wonder you don't like the Pike. You're comparing it to the Fox 36 instead of Fox 34. I see it as being to the Lyrik, similar to what a SID is to a Revelation (pared down chassis in places such as the CSU). I even think the 34 has better control when it comes to plowing recklessly, but it is kind of heavy and people don't like its '13 rep of having a too open descend setting. Considering you're sticking a 36 on it, it's tough choice between the two. I don't like the Norco's graphics, but I'm vain like that. There are other viable options other than those two, so I'm curious as to why it's down to these two. Did you eliminate the Mach 6 from your options for any reason? I presume you don't want a more mainstream brand.

To me something looks wrong with the Mach 6, the shock looks huge in the frame or something, just flat out hate to look at it. The Knolly 4x4 design had me hooked with the Delirium. The Range is carbon and has almost identical geo as the Warden and personally I think the carbon design with the modern flowy lines is the best looking bike out. I did consider the new GT Force carbon but they have limitations on what we can buy here in US in terms of frame only options & complete builds which is BS, I will simply take my $ elsewhere...

Meh, does nothing for me & they are on the heavy side for carbon, im sure its a nice ride though. I put those in the same bracket as the pimped out Mojos, I will leave em to the dentists lawyers & Drs out there. No offense to said professions, well except maybe the lawyers...:?:

Orbea Rallon, not sure if it is available as frame only. . . . if not i would go Norco

I have been in contact with an Orbea rep. Nice looking bikes for sure & the full BOS would be rare!

Guys with Rockshock reverb you can drop your seat to what ever height you want! There isn't a need for straight seat tubes anymore with the invention of dropper posts.........unless you still manually drop a post on a 6k bike. Don't they all come with a dropper post now and days?

Granted frames like the norco with a bend/pivot in the seattube can accomodate a dropper post; but i like more than 4-5" of drop (max for dropper posts except unreliable? KS) in some situations. Just my prefernce, could be i have an unusual build and very top-heavy so like to lower my center of gravity as much as possible when it gets real steep or tricky; feel sketchy otherwise. Im not racing i can spend 5 seconds loering my post at top of the hill. saves weight too. However, since my injury my riding has mellowed so might not be so important anymore.

Thank you.

Theres a shop called Fenix Cycling:

23681 La Palma Ave
Yorba Linda
714 692 2502

I know they will be getting a heap of 2014 norcos and alot of the CB ones.
Ask for Oz he is the owner of the shop. Really cool guy.

I stopped by this shop today bc i also like the Norcos but they didn't have any of the carbon bikes in stock.
Nice little shop. And yes the people were very cool. Thanks... I never knew this shop was there.

Sorry Doc, just having fun! Lower build completes are shipping next month, LE framesets and completes mid Feb. Wardens are also supposed to be shipping mid Feb.

What he said. Oz confirmed Feb.

Warden won't pedal worse than the Norco (other than overall weight). FSR and 4x4 have the same amount of mechanical platform damping - NONE! It all depends on your shock, your drivetrain, the geometry and the way you ride. I smell a Norco in your future. The Knolly might be too close to your Rune to justify a purchase. Not a recommendation, just an observation.

Socalmx, it sounds like you have your mind set on the norco, especially since your bashing a bunch of bikes that alot of people on this site are riding. Pull the trigger and and go ride. You wont regret any decision you make, theyre all good bikes

Not bashing, they are all good bikes just having some fun. Only regret I ever had is getting rid of my ASR-7, should have kept it around as a spare, such a fun bike. My decision might just come down to whatever deal breaks through first!

Here are a couple of things to keep in mind when talking about lawyers, Dr's, etc on their Mach 6's. First link is just your typical 35'+ step down. The lip he jumps over is 10' out from the landing.

This is 15' vertical rock face that nobody recalls anyone else ever hitting. I nearly soiled my riding shorts just looking over the edge.

Just giving you a hard time BTW. Not many people in those professions can ride like this! Personally between the two you have mentioned I would go for the Norco. I can feel some serious flex in my Alu Specialized Enduro 29 when the going gets nasty. None of that to be found on my HD down the same trail at the same pace.

And you attribute that to carbon vs aluminum? How about 26er v 29er? How about longer spokes? More lateral leverage? Your 29er will have a lot more flex than your 26er even if they were both carbon.

That said, yes a carbon version of the exact same bike with the exact same wheels/tires/components is usually stiffer laterally, or so I have read.

I have spent a little time aboard the SWorks version with both carbon wheels and front triangle and it does not flex nearly as much, but I have not had the opportunity to hit my local trails where I could really feel the difference. It is definitely a combination of everything, but I can feel the wheels going in different directions and an inability to hold a line which is more frame than wheels. Carbon wheels will eliminate the flex that most people feel better than a carbon frame though.

Sworks Stumpy with well built carbon wheels can hold the line better than my sphinter.

A good carbon frame cannot be beat in terms of stiffness and a good carbon wheelset cannot be beat also in terms of stiffness. Add them together you realize your fork flexes and your tires is not at the right pressure. keep in mind once you increase stiffness in one area it might high light your deficiencies in other areas, but once you get everything sorted out it is sublime!

I really like Norco Range's clean lines and hate looking at the Knolly's quadruple linkages. There you have it. No experience with both bikes and purely judging on looks alone.
