Quick update...2 weeks since injury (mostly to share pics).

stitches from surgery removed today.steri-strips in place until fall off

atrophy is f'n a b!tch - calve shrinking in front of my eyes. gonna be rocking a chicken leg in no time

X-ray from plates, pins, screws

Robo-cop walking boot (all the cool kids got em=P~ )

dr suggests all is healing well. looking for "full" recovery.(90+)

still going f'n mad not riding. ](*,) ](*,) ](*,)

looks like final WS events for '06 may be out of picture but maybe big comback is first time doing CC or VC :bang:

That’s a very nasty break! I just injured my ankle enough to probably keep me from finishing the race season. So, I’ve been pretty down this morning. But I have to admit, my injury is a paper cut compared to that. I hope all the healing goes well for you and you’re able to do CC or VQ. I think either one is a big goal and a stretch for an injury like that.

That f'in rocks. I don't know if you busted the fibula into two pieces or just fractured it, but either way, the boot came around pretty quick. What was the timeline between the break and the boot?

The fact that they're going to let you bear weight on it this soon will help a TON in terms of slowing/stoping some of the atrophy and probably helping out with nerve issues too.

So when's PT start?

Think boot was more a function that it had to be in "something". told absolutely no weight bearing for now. still on crutches. next visit ~3 weeks and think he will determine then

No line of site of yet - assume will discuss on next visit but hope sooner than later

Sorry about not reading carefully enough about the 2 weeks. With regard to the boot, I just assumed that since they were giving you a boot instead of a cast, that they were gonna let you start walking on it. Even still, if you're allowed to bear weight at 5-6 weeks out, you'll be miles ahead of the rest of us that had to wait much longer.

The atrophy is freaky eh. I had a bulkly post op cast (bandages, some batting, memory glass splints, and more bandages) for about 2 weeks before getting my regular fiberglass cast. When they pulled the post op cast off, I couldn't believe how small my calf had gotten. Then on about 2 week intervals from there, I'd go in for xrays, check on the incision, etc, and pretty much always got a new cast because the muscle kept getting smaller/cast looser. My last cast before the boot, I the o.d. of my cast was barely bigger than the o.d. of my other(healthy) calf.

Glad to hear you're doing well, and things are moving along quickly for ya.

Did you get the Ti screws?

I was told if you tell the doc's you were hurt in a biking accident they're required by law (or something like that) to only use Ti parts when putting us back together.

My co-worker once shot me thru the foot with a nail gun when I was doing framing. It really didn't hurt that bad. We had to use a claw hammer to pull it back out. I never did go to the doctors. I was working for a guy who was subbing from a sub. Nobody had that thing called insurance in those days.

Candidaly not sure if Ti. meant to ask each time but always forget as most of my inquiries seem to be related to recovery time. as you may tell not a gear head :lol:

in any regard, surgeon suggests all plates/screws, etc are to be removed in 8-9 months so merely "demo-ing" parts for now.

years ago did some construction as well (help pay for college) and was on site when a guy shot himself in hand with Hilti gun. he merely took some pliers (sp?) and pulled nail out himself (more of a man than me!):-s

btw- anyone ever replace a ratchet/compression strap for SIDI's dom's. they cut mine to get to ankle and I need to replace.

Ouch. I didn't hear about you misfortune until now, that really sucks. I had stitches a few weeks ago and I have another fews weeks before I'm on a bike myself - because I had stitches on the inside too. I don't see anything getting smaller though===Unfortunately I think my waist has already grown, fortunately my butt is growing in proportion. YIKES! lol

Get well soon. And i think setting a goal like VQ is good. I will help motivate you to get back into shape.

Piece of cake. The ratchet buckle is held on by a single phillips head screw (use some blue loctite on this) if this was damaged and the strap just slips in from the opposite side of the buckle.

my bad - should have been more clear. i know how to replace, was wondering if anyone knows of a local bike shop or website to purchase the buckle/strap. quick check of some online shops can only find shoes

Laguna Cyclery had the buckles in stock when I needed them. Not sure about the strap though.
