In an effort to help others figure out what trails are open in the ANF I published an entry on my blog with interactive maps showing the Station Fire closure area. I would embed the mapping applications here but this site does not support the scripting. You can also download a KML file of the closure area from the post as well if you want to work with a local install of Google Earth.

So whatever happened with the son-of-a-B**** that was supposedly responsible? Last I heard they had a potential suspect, but that was just it... The last I heard. It seem all the media attention has disappeared from this story.

I do follow the update from the LA TIMES regarding the what happened that first day the fire started.

It's usually a slow process to build a case....if there is no new news you won't see an update....I wouldn't worry at all....the case is going forward.....

Speaking of the Station Fire, does anyone know where I can get a decent map showing what parts of the forest are closed? I saw one on the LA Forest website but it was very low-res and it was hard to make out the boundary area. Thanks!

Thanks Rumples, that hiker map is much better. Is route 39 open then, or is it only available to through-traffic-no-stopping? I'd like to cross the San Gabriel Reservoir and explore some of the fire roads off of the east fork road on the eastern side of the reservoir.

39 is still closed about 2 miles past the OHV gate, as of Sunday.

I drove up there after the swap meet.

Now, it's always closed to Islip Saddle; it's just a matter of how far down. Traditionally, it's been just above Crystal Lake. But, there's been the closure there for about ~6 years maybe.
Coldbrook is actually pretty far up and past the forks.

^^^The 39 is closed to cars from Crystal Lake up to Hwy2, but you can still ride it by bicycle. What has been open in the last few years is open now and has been for a while.

You can see the damage of the Morris Fire while riding the 39. Doesn't compare to the Station Fire, but pretty weird to see nevertheless.

    Update from the FS

This is directly from an email from the Angeles National Forest to FS volunteers:

    ----------------------------------------------

April’s weather pattern allowed us to conduct trail condition surveys of trails impacted by the Station Fire and this past winter storms. Some trails were greatly impacted while others appeared to survive with minor damage. Based upon this survey, we’ll recommend that certain trails be opened for public use while others will remain closed until the surrounding area stabilizes or a contract is awarded for trail reconstruction.

We’ve started some trail reconstruction work (El Prieto, Silver Moccasin NRT, Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail etc) and will be working with Student Conservation Association Fire Recovery personnel in June on trail reconstruction projects. Thank you, for those that assisted in this trail condition survey or provided information.

California Trail Day was a low key event since we didn’t know if the weather was going to cooperate and if access to Wildwood Picnic Area would be available. We had approx. 50 individuals attend this event and they worked on either the Stone Canyon or Condor Peak Trails. What a difference they’ve made on these trails.

Along with the Trail Condition Surveys, we’ve also developed a strategy for reopening Developed Recreation Sites impacted by the Station Fire. Our tentative goal is to have the majority of High Country sites (Chilao Campground/Picnic Area, Horse Flat Campground, Sulphur Springs Trail Camp, Buckhorn Station Trailhead, Buckhorn Campground, Eagles Roost Picnic Area, Islip Saddle Trail Camp etc) and Millard Campground ready for opening by mid- May.

Hidden Springs Picnic Area, Monte Cristo Campground and Lower Big Tujunga Canyon ready for opening by July 4th. Some of the other sites (Messenger Flat, Lightning Point Group Site, Mt. Pacifico Campground, Gould Mesa Trail Camp etc) may be closed this season because of safety issues.

Me too! I'm heading up again this weekend to continue the trail surveys for the FS, and we have a meeting with the FS the following week at which we expect to get some more concrete news/dates.
