I'm having a debate with a friend right now...

He thinks that an 9 speed crankset will not work with a bike that has all 8 speed parts (FD, RD, Chian, and cassette)

I on the other remember reading somewhere that you CAN run a 9 speed crankset with an 8 speed drivetrain (FD, RD, Chain, and cassette).

    Who's right? :?:

cransets not a problem , it would be chain rings, almost all 8 speed drivetrains can run a 9 speed chain so you shouldnt have a problem and if you do you can always buy rings

but will the 9 speed chain ring work? and would the 8 speed chain work? or would you have to run the 9 speed chain?

Just make sure you have 8 speed crank bolts and cables.

A 9-speed crankset will work fine with an 8-speed system. No need to swap chainrings. You can use either an 8- or 9-speed chain, but I would stick with an 8-speed because that's what the cassette prefers.

No No No, run the nine speed chain with the nine speed cranks, other wize you end up getting chain suck too easily. the nine speed chain works just fine on an eight sped cassette.

The width of the two chains is seriously different, the 8spd. chain will float sise to side creating nast wear, while the 9spd chain will work on the cranks and cass. fine. Trust me and mike on this dont do it unless you are stranded and dont have an option
