In Randy Vogel's book, MTB'ing OC, it's called Bong Drop. On Franko's Map of South Coast Wilderness, it's called 5 Oaks. Why the change?

I'm pretty sure they are. They are in identical places on the map in the book, and on the Franko's map. Read the description of Bong Drop on page 131 of the book. The book is playing it safe on the description of the sandstone droppy section about 30 feet before the stairs & bridge. There is a final drop-off that you should not even consider riding.

Wow, they ARE playing it rather safe by saying that. That thing is completely rollable.

I'll sheepishly admit to not rolling it the other day. It was my first time down 5 Oaks though. I did do the stairs without falling into the PO infested ditch.

Bong Drop is a different trail that comes down from the water tower area near 5 oaks. It probably was not illegal when the book was published. They also include Direct Dial which ends in the Dog Park in Laguna. That was previously a legal trail too.

Two different trails eh... ;)

Royta, you gotta sack up and roll that section bubB!!!
(just givin' you a hard time)

Maybe next time I'll lower my saddle. What do you do on the last section, go left and then cross to the right? Or are you guys dropping right off the face of it and going right on through the stairs?

Definitely drop the saddle for Oaks. I always do, I can get lower and not worry about racking my nuts on my seat that way. As far as that last section goes, I always go right down the middle of it, I think maybe more to the right side slightly, just lean back, let it roll and you'll be fine, make sure to use enough front brake to keep you from sliding into that shrubbery/bush on the right side when you make the left to head down the water bars, then the stair section.

Yeah the right side is usually the way my speed carries me anyway. The stairs can be a bit tricky but just go around to the right at the end right before you hit the bridge ;) 5 Oaks is a very fun trail.....especially after rain when it isn't all sandy....you can get some really good speed going towards the beginning.

My brother and I accidently headed down at least part of Bong Drop or Maybe Direct Dial the first time I tried to do Five Oaks. Gnnnarrrly!!!!

you didn't drop your seat, brutal! bong drop is rollable no problem. we have a good huck on the small road above bong drop that is about a 9 footer, its a good one. there is another trail between 5oaks and bong drop, but i think its overgrown.

If Bong Drop is an illegal trail, why would any of it be rollable? ](*,) ](*,) ](*,)
