4 Days in Bliss

This is a trip that has many of us jealous of the rides, the time off work, doing it with a special person and a dozen other things! So happy you two got to do this!

Sounds Great! We stopped in Oregon on our way here I fell in love its beautful. We will spend time there riding on our way back. My friend recommended riding Crater Lake.

Hey El- We drove by Crater Lake today. I would not recommend riding it on the road. Lots of traffic, barely a white line, and lots of touristas. However, que bonita!

Have a great trip!

Trip update: We rode Waldo Lake yesterday, possibly the first people to attempt it this summer. Much of the east side was actually okay, just a bit of deadfall and quite a few snow patches. But the south side of the lake had snow banks and little swamps, so we turned back on the road and hit the trails on the north end of the lake through the burn area where we, once again, had to turn around--this time because of deadfall. Cruised back to camp after 19 interesting miles.

The lake lived up to it's reputation as the skeeter capital of the West. We deeted up for the ride, covered up and netted our heads in camp, had a screen around our eating area, but there were constant swarms waiting for you to expose a little skin. Still, we had a lakefront site, it was super quiet, and it was just another little adventure in the Land of Green.

We're in the city of Mt. Shasta now- cool little town with a growing bike culture.

Beth and Lynn- Thanks! *blush* : )

Binh and Liz- We didn't frolic in the bear grass because there were too many damn flowers, no room for frolickers!

This is one of those trips you just have to go and do....Doug and I are very, very lucky to have each other to enjoy this kind of an adventure with!

Snow Fields and Skeeters on Waldo Lake

We started out from Islet Campground and rode the Waldo Lake Trail as far as a half mile past the cut-off for Betty Lake. Initially our ride consisted of very dry trails with crunchy pine cones under our tires and a tread that looked like no one had ridden it in months. A few trees down here and there, some of them we could bunny hop over (yep, the big Turner is really good for that!) and then at about the 6,000' elevation mark, we started encountering patches of snow.
Since we're old hands at riding through snow and during snow storms, we kept on riding. Until we got to the point where we had to decide to wade through the boggy marsh at the south end of the trail, or turn back.
With clouds of skeeters swarming around our heads, we decided to turn around and then went up the cutoff to Betty Lake and the main road, then rode the pavement back to North Waldo and back onto the trail to the burned area. Essentially we rode the entire east side of the lake, but from what we rode, I'm sure the west side would be just as much fun. Lots of flowy singletrack, not techy at all.
Everyone in Oakridge warned us about the skeeters.....holy crap....they were not exaggerating!! We were glad to have deet, a "bug hut" netting enclosure and bug nets for our heads to stay somewhat clear of them, but still got masses of bites!

We're headed to Tahoe today through Tuesday. Anybody else up there?

Hey Doug,

Lubo and I will be up there August 9 - August 15. If you and Genny are still there, you are welcome to join us. We might hit D-ville and Flume or Powerline.

P.S. Keep the pictures coming. They look awesome!

This trip sounds and looks simply amazing!!!!!

Tempting, it's only a three hour drive...
If you come back through the bay area and want to ride, let me know. I'm living there now.

Thanks, David! But we hit the Bay area on our way up. We're off to Mammoth next (then reluctantly back to reality). Good luck up there! And keep in touch.

More Days of Bliss....

Our final week of our road trip and we are starting out in South Lake Tahoe with what other than the Flume Trail!! Neither Doug or myself had ever ridden in Tahoe, so this was a treat to check out the lake from up above on the trail. And the views did not disappoint!

Its still spring up here too, and the flowers are just going off! Corn Plants are blooming, the hillsides are just covered in purples, pinks and yellow!

For Liz and Binh: a meadow frolic!

I'm sure they can't wait to get home and ride the local trails. All that green, water, and tacky dirt must be getting annoying by now. Thanks for the frolic!
