Sure. What could be more fun? I'm sure to improve if I don't have to take a "natural break".

Ha! Yeah right. Nobody "wants" to do The Traverse. It's just a life requirement that gives you a few months to pull the trigger on.

    Hi HellRider!! :p

Gene, I've seen that pic a number of times, but never really studied it! Didn't notice the entire CRANK in your hand! LOL Good times! Good carnage!

No. Usually doesn't sell out till AFTER the VQ/CC is done and people realize they like the Pain Divide.

Ya, I left 4 Corners and about a 1/2 mile or so later, my chain dropped into the small ring up front without shifting. I looked down and noticed a gap between my crank arm and frame. As I up-clipped, the crank came off and stayed on my shoe. A rider came by with some allen wrenches and we tried to put it back on, but couldn't. I coasted back to 4 Corners where Tim from Switchback got it on and got me going again. Cost me about 30 min or so, but all part of racing.

That's awesome. Yeah, Tim's like that. Just after that, he heckled me to the peak. LOL

Thinking about it... I have yet to ride all the parts of the trail, so I will be trying to break up pieces of the ride over the next couple of months. Not so much for "training" as familiarization.

In my humble opinion, I would do the first half of the race just to see where you're at. If you're not even close to making 4 corners by the 4 hour mark, the I'd concentrate on training NOW. But if you can make that distance then all that's left is familiarization.

After that, you might want to familiarize yourself with the 3 mile descent from Santiago Peak to the second cutoff. I was pushing hard down that hill to make the second cutoff and had quite a few close calls.... the guy that was with me DIDN'T make it and crashed. Hard and fast.

After that I'd get to know The Wall... really well. Know it's there. Hate it you will. Primarily because you will have had over a dozen mini-walls before hand.

Next make sure you know what Trabuco is because it's a gnarly animal when you've got 40 miles under your belt. It's gnarly on fresh legs let alone tired and worn out.

I'm NO expert, but have done the course and hope my rookie insight may help.

I am going to sign up again this year and once again on the Single Speed. I set a goal of sub 6 hours last year and came in at 6:15. I want to shave the 15 minutes this year.

Thanks - I've done the HJ/Trabuco loop so I know what's going on there. Next I'm going to start doing climbs up HJ to Santiago and then down via Upper HJ, across MD to Trabuco and down, to familiarize myself with the back end.

Then I'll start peeling back the front end via Black Star out and backs or Black Star / Harding.

I have no idea what to expect at this point in terms of time... I may be begging off if I run really short.

The route I have (from several years ago) shows Upper Holy Jim. Is it now Main Divide the whole way to Trabuco?

If you want to know what the Traverse is all about, start at Black Star and "traverse" your way to Trabuco. The worst climb IMHO is from coming from Silverado MW to 4 Corners. There are some long steep climbs there and you'll be doing it in the sun in May. Going down UHJ will not be part of the Traverse, so that will not help you there unless you're doing the VQ/CC.
