Hey Perm, you have until March to train for it. If I can attempt it so can you. It might even be helpful to have a goal to shoot for.

My favorite training ride for when i did the CC four years ago: lower San Juan lot up to Cocktail, clockwise round the lollipop, down Chiquito, up the Ortega to Blue Jay, descend San Juan. I never clocked the exact mileage and elevation, but i'd estimate it's at least 35 miles and 6,000 feet. Much more enjoyable than the boring Pain Divide, too.

There's actually a decent shoulder for most of that part of the highway; not as scary as you might think. Or maybe that's just what i imagined cuz i was so bone-tired by that point of the ride. ;)

I am sure the Trail Angel's will have an extensive list. Thinking about the CC for myself, signed up last year, but gave up my spot due to too much work and not enough training time. K

Three of the best training rides that actually covers the trails you'll be on is (in order of difficulty):

    #1
    - up BlackStar
    - Main Divide East
    - down Silverado Motorway
    - out Silverado Canyon Road to Blackstar

    Blackstar-Motorway

    and

    #2
    - Up Holy Jim
    - across Main Divide to the east
    - down Trabuco
    - up W. Horsethief
    - west across Main Divide
    - down Holy Jim

Similar route but not exactly the same

    and

    #3
    - Up Harding to 4 corners
    - west on Main Divide
    - down Silverado Motorway
    - up Maple Springs
    - down Harding

    Harding-Motorway

    Justin,
Let me know when you start doing the training rides. I'll meet with you all. It will be good to ride that side of the mountain again.

I'll probably sign up for the VQ. I have decided that 2008 will be the year of endurance events. The VQ might be the first big challenge of the year.

FWIW, the VQ "feels" like doing the CC twice.

My first event was the CC in 2003. 6.5hrs (i think) on my SS.
I thought, "I could have totally kept going."

2004 was the VQ...and WACK....reality. Took me 4 hours to do that last loop. Yeaouch. Took another 2 years to slay that beast correctly.

The VQ is a serious physical investment...while the CC can be completed with marginal training by a decent rider.

    I'm just wondering...

I've seen a lot of different things going on on the VQ/CC, once some of the guys were doing it with bikes and no chains. They were mostly running it though and passed me early and I never seen them again. I heard they did well. I don't believe I've ever heard of anyone doing it on a CX bike. I'm thinking this could be fun as none of the trail is super technical, but Motorway and Trabuco will be fairly hard to contend with....Yep, I'm thinking of giving it a go with a CX bike.[IMG]

Mandy Eakins rode a redline conquest for last years CC.....had a fairly fast time as well.

But yeah....the descents would really blow.

Rudy Nadler has done the VQ once or twice on a fixed Matt Chester cross bike. That was something to see! He passed me.......going down Motorway...on a fixed gear. Do the math there......I tried...it didn't add up!

    SSers,
What gearing are you running for the VQ? (in gear-inches)
I ride with about 39.5" now, but after a few months of training I should be able to handle something bigger.
Any idea what Cameron Brenneman (sp?) was riding when he set the record?
    Thanks
