I used to race sport and am about at that level now so I entered sport. Plus I've been riding for 19 years so I'd feel lame jumping in as a beginner...:-s
But really, I wasn't racing anybody but myself.

Man all this racing talk has got me interested. I have raced BMX a lot and a few DH races, but never XC. Now I really just need to man up and do it. I have always just felt im not ready becuase I would be down on myself if I did not do well. The one time I was up to do xc stuff on my first lap ( not even a mile in) my crank fell off with a stripped out BB.

A great way to get an introduction into multi-hour/endurance racing is by doing it on a relay team! You get the full experience with a lot less riding than a solo!

I think age plays a factor. I'm 44 and turned 10 laps in the 40+ category, which resulted in 3rd place. 1st place had 11 laps. I think I could have got to the podium in the expert category as well. I think the most solo laps was 12.

    Thanks Guys!

I want to thank all of our STR family for supporting our little race series. You guys are becoming the pulse by which we gauge the SoCal Mountain bike community! I am a lucky guy to be able to watch all the friendships and memories being made at our events. That is what cycling is all about. The vibe this past weekend was awesome! The energy in the pits was electric! I look forward to hangin with you all for a long time to come. But as for today I'm on my way to bed!!!;)

I really like these XC/Endurance races.....they are really a cross between the two types of races.

I finally got around to cleaning off my gear from Saturday. Everything was filthy!

At about the 2 mile mark, there's a steep climb that leads you close to a road turnout - and then you take a left and continue on some singletrack. Remember the rock that's kinda in the way (bigger boulder on right, smaller boulder on left) that you had to squeeze through?

I guess I should have been a little more careful! I think I hit the rock on the left at least 4-5 times. A few nicks in the lower rocker and a big ouchie on the crankarms. There goes resale value! :(

Don't feel bad. Rim is my "home" trail. I can't tell you how many times that rock has gotten me. Everytime I ride by it I cringe. Since I usually granny up the climb right before the turnout, I forget to shift before I get to the rock. It's right about that time I run out of momentum and have to pedal and realize...oh crap, wrong gear - crunch.

The 24 hour race at Hurkey in September has a 8 hour race, as well as 24 hour race, that you can solo. It's a good course also.
