I'm surprised to see no one if talking about the up and coming 12 Hours down at Vail Lake. My 5 man team Shift Happens will be returning to hammer out some laps. Weather looks like it will be cool again this year which is way different than 2008/2009 when we saw 100F+ temps on the Damn climb.

So who's in? We're heading out for a pre-ride the morning of Memorial day.

Looking forward it. I think we are being spared the Damn climb :)

I wanted to but I thought it was the 12th. I'll be in Santa Ynez for the U.S. Cup XC race that is on the 6th.

I don't think I have the fitness to race sat the 5th and then drive to Santa Ynez.

Yep, no Damn climb. Looks like course is very similar to June, 2010. Out Military loop, up Bridges, down new switchbacks to top of Tunnel of Love, up Ambulance, down Funner Ridgeline about 1/2 way then up to another ridgeline decent (i think) then the normal stuff to the finish (Vics, BMX, and a short out and back before final finish).

I'm in a 4 man, The Four Horned Goats. We are slow, but we have fun. The course is marked and is in good shape. 9.2 miles and apx 1100' of climb. No damn climb.

    Here's the course;

Did you preride? What's the connector like to Tunnel of Love? Heard last year it was pretty sketchy. Also, what's the trail like that comes off the Funner Ridgeline and what's the second decent like?

I did one lap the other day.

The connector to the Tunnel of Love, is called Tarantula. It's switch backs down, with a couple of semi-sketchy turns, not too bad (one is real sandy and another is rocky. Right now it's in good shape.

The connector from Funner is a new small section of single track with a couple of turns, one easy and one a little tighter, is brand new, cut by Jason. It connects to the single track called Boomerang which is a fun flowy section with a couple techy spots on the way up.

That boomerang trail takes a lot out of you. Not looking forward to the climb up it, but the descent coming back is fun, lots of swoopy turns that you can pump through.

Where are you two going to pit at?

    Little update

Nice to see STR talking race! This race is shaping up to be Awesome! The course is as described above. The tarantula connector leading to the top of the tunnel o love is in good shape. The new short connector from the funner ridge line is ok. My crew and I will be working the trails all week. This course is promising to be of the funnest we've had. For those presiding this weekend the start is at the pool. The course is semi marked and ready to ride. I will be out this Friday putting up more trail markers and tightening things up a bit. Have fun and be safe!

Ps stay tuned for news on the 2 biggest weeks of mountain biking on the west coast. Coming soon at vail lake! Just a quick hint - oct 1st west coast marathon champs on sat and ca state xc finals on Sunday. The next weekend will have trail runs, gravity enduro, ss monster mash, and cyclocross! Get ready to rumble!!,!,!,!,!

We were doing some recon, so it was a slow 59min. I think the fast times will be pretty similar to the last course, maybe a bit quicker. Like Jason said, it's a fun course.

Wait what? State xc finals not at bonelli? Like the sound of that. A cx race at vail too? About time, that place has so much potential for one. Well I'm in for he 4th. Giving it another go in he SS solo after not doing to well in January. That first race was kind of last second and this time I am prepared. Glad tarantula is fixed. Was not in the best shape a few weeks ago. Should be a fun time till after about 5 hours on the course, things start to get a little hazy in my head after that.

Chris, it's not too bad now with the earlier turn onto it from Funner, I think you'll be happier with it.

This course does look shorter then January because you don't go all the way down funner which makes it seem like the climb it is shorter too before coming down again. Did that make sense? Like last time I expect half the physical effort (or maybe its mental effort) of this course to be getting to the top of bridges before dropping into tunnel of love.

So here's the dealio on the course length. It is about the same with a bit more flow. I took out the last section of the funner ridge line which took out that little steep short uphill into the slingshot loop. But I added vics trail and weve put in the new slolam course which leads down to the go-cart track. Just used it for the high school race. It was interesting. Not quict float yet but great for spectators and pics.

Looking to replace our 5th man that dropped out last minute due to business conflict. If you know of anyone interested let them know and have them give me a call. Tim 949-514-0367
