    Dreams From the Monster Factory
    by Sunny Schwartz

An autobiographical tale of her career that has been dedicated to reforming the jail system here in California (directly) and around the world (more indirectly), helping the most ruthless offenders break their cycle of violence, and reducing recidivism through education and restorative justice programs.

I rode the Luge today listening to the end of Gunslinger and the start of Dark Tower II--amazing is a good summary, and not yet too long :) Affirmative on Michael Crichton, Tom Clancy, Kurt Vonnegut (so it goes), F. Nietzsche, Dan Brown and Angels and Demons (try Inferno).

I'd forgotten about this thread! Thanks for bumping it taprackbang.

A few suggestions if anyone is interested, from what I've been reading this spring/summer:

The Lost Cyclist, David Herlihy; tells the very interesting story of a few of the first round-the-world cyclists, and what occurs when one of them is lost during his trek.

Tyrants, Marshall Klimasewiski; a very interesting and engaging set of short stories from a new author.

Doc, Mary Doria Russell; excellently researched historical piece regarding Doc Holliday's time in Dodge City and earlier life in the south.

    Acts of Faith, Philip Caputo

    Norwegian Wood, Haruki Murakami

and re-read Blood Meridian for the umpteenth time, this time for a philosophy book club discussion. In my mind still one of the greatest pieces of American literature of the 20th century.

oh, and also been reading Karen Russell's Vampires in the Lemon Grove, another book of short stories. Makes me want to put more of her work on my to-read list.

I'm still awake because I couldn't put the book down. " black water" the rise of the most powerful mercenary army. Some stuff in there to really make you question the 14 years of war we are in.

Scaling Up Excellence by Robert Sutton and Huggy Rao. Lots of anecdotes about failed and successful attempts at organizational leadership - problems, solutions and analysis. OK, OK, it's actually more interesting than it sounds, especially if you are in a leadership position. A good follow up to Jim Collins' iconic "Good to Great" and/or Colin Powell's "It Worked for Me..."
