That guy was lucky to know that animals fear danger, he kept upright and didn't start running away. Although Cougars are felines, canines have the same behavior patterns if you come across a nasty dog, rogue coyote or a drunk lady at your bar.

I had a situation hiking in Mammoth a few years ago with a black bear. The dude was so used to people and knew that I had snacks in my backpack, he wouldn't run away.
So after yelling, jumping and making all kinds of gestures, he took off. Never pretend to act aggressive and approach. Carry mace too, if you can.

Despite filming the whole thing I really think he handled the situation better than I would have. Would it be wrong to pop a cap in that cat the second time it tried to get close?

I have been closer twice. One time it came after me from a long distance away and walked right up to me, I was behind a fence. 12 foot fence, it was not tall enough for me. Another time me and the mtn dawgs got behind one, they tore after it. It was running and its ears were flowing with feathery tufts on the ends. They all out ran me, I rode as fast as I could, and I came around a corner, the dawgs had tree'ed it. They do not bother you, but the first time I am sure it wanted me for dinner.
