That ride report is gnarly. Exactly what I am trying to get into. I seem to have plateaued at ~25-30 miles for the past month. :( I ride to work most days, but it is only 3.5 miles each way and then I ride longer on the weekends. I was progressing better with summer off and able to ride 20-25 miles 4-5 days per week. I need to get out onto some trails, but not sure if I have the legs to climb, yet. Hopefully by the Spring I'll be able to ride centuries and can do a ride down to SD.

I just started riding in the Spring. It had been several years since I did much riding on a bike and didn't realize how out of shape I had gotten. I was huffing and puffing after five miles for the first few weeks. Then being a teacher, I had the summer off, so I was able to go out several times a week and I picked up a better bike for pavement (Surly CrossCheck). I just did my longest ride last weekend which I was from downtown HB to the River View golf course along the SART (~32 miles). I have kind of plateued at ~25 miles for the last month. :(

What got me into it again was a camping trip, not this summer, but the one before, up through Humboldt and Oregon. I saw these people riding and camping. I asked a couple, "What are you guys doing?"

"Bike touring." They proceeded to explain to me what that was, as I was unaware of it and I was instantly hooked. So, for the past year I have been reading about people's bike tours on sites like crazyguyonabike. With the summers off it is perfect. Hence the name, BikeThePlanet. It is my new interest. Now if only my body would catch up with my ambition.

My immediate goal is to build up for a San Diego ride and then in the next couple of summers fly up to Vancouver and tour down the PCH. I am not into road racing or going fast, but long distance riding (along with MTBing) is something I am trying to work towards.

ahhhh, weird. yessss indeed, black rose is quite familiar, though i'd never have remembered that w/o your prompt. smallass fekkin world.

yes, we need to shoot some shit right between the eyes. i'm slowly getting my game together. did SAG for a bunch of downtown messengers saturday, for their ride back down from santa barbara. (we drove up to the train station.) shot some vid for them but like a dumbass deleted the best vid clip i shot. gonna try to see about recovering it. the boys wll be happy to see it.

thanks for the write-back. i'm sure it's rex who OD'd. man it kinda breaks my heart. will never forget playing catch, effing around with curves and sliders.

i'm swapping my 10-year-old specialized roadie for a mtnbk a friend is putting together for me. will keep my torelli road bike, though i'm considering looking for a nice frame and slapping the dura-ace from the 'relli onto it. that's down the road though. just trying to get in shape.

yes, we'll be riding at some point, mike.

I knew the Troxwells very well, Paul & Jeff. Debbie Sanders who married JR got really sick and almost died about a year ago. She's still having some problems. I'm still in contact with them as well as Steve Noah, Jimmy Hunter and Bob Hallock. I knew Matt Browning and Rex his little brother I heard one of them had died from herion too. Darrel Herrin who was my best friend growing up died 3 years ago from an intentional O.D He was going to go back to prison again and just couldn't handle it so he did himself in.

Solvang is my second favorite century and if you're in condition for it, it's a lot of fun. Let me know if you want to get together for a ride some day. I'm mostly on the mountain bike or riding the ATV's on the weekends but I'd love to ride and shoot the shit with you.

BTW, not sure if you remember it but we were in a gang we started called "Black Rose", a lot of folks remember that.

      mike,

spoke with my brother david and his memory seemed jogged by the mention of your name though when i told him you were a little older, he wasn't so sure. anyway, that moved into a discussion of the johnsons, the traxels up the block, the sanders sisters around the corner, the privett brothers, etc. i have no idea whether these names ring any bells. i knew of them more than i hung around, as my brother (the beginnings of getting into a lot of trouble). i tend to always ask him about a guy i knew, we played harbor area baseball, named rex browning. (he had an older brother.) anyway, david says he might've OD'd, that he got caught up in heroin. sad.

the solvang century went well. it was a long day for me, i found out how pathetic my conditioning is, but i felt a sense of accomplishment. doing the conejo ride in a couple weeks with a friend. he's doing the century, i'm going 60-something.

thanks for the friend invite. be well.

      - bob

hey there. joined up here on a kind of bogus pretext. was looking up "billy johnson" online and came across your notes about him related to another user's avatar. i knew the johnson brothers, lived next door in costa mesa and went to school with ricky and billy. my brother david knows them better, but connected to the unsavory side. anyway, he's the one who mentioned billy and pelican bay(?). i went to rea and estancia. wondering if we might have crossed paths back in CM days. anyway, take care. (yeah, i ride but pretty much all road...so far.) - bob

yeah, we have 3 groups, we call them the long ride the medium ride and the short ride. We call them that so people don't feel bad if they can't ride with the faster guys. And sometimes we just don't want to hammer. We started with over 50 people this morning and I went with the medium group but I soon rode away from them and finished with the fast group. In fact I stopped to wait for the medium group but I figured WTH? and took off after the fast group after I gave them a mile head start. I did manage to catch them though. Now I need a nap.

Hey, are you riding sunday 8/3? I might like to tag along. I'm not as fit or fast as I was, but I didn't put on weight at least. I rode three times this week and it didn't kill me so I thought I'd ask. I may just jump in on the Cycling Connection ride tomorrow if not.

If you never confront climbs, you're missing the essence of the sport.
With ascents come adversity. Without adversity, there's no challenge.
Without challenge, no improvement, no sense of accomplishment, no deep-down joy .
