It figures that the county would get the name wrong.

I have always called it Lizard. A few years ago the park asked me (actually SHARE) to make trail signs in anticipation of its opening. They ended up not using the signs I had made but they all said Lizard. I guess if anyone got it wrong it was me.

I Took a picture of the namesake Lizard today in case anyone wanted to know where the name came from. Hard to see in the picture but the is a lizard face in that rock formation.

oops. I'll try posting it again.

Spelling has never been their thing. Did you ever notice that it is El Moro Canyon and El Morro Elementary School?

Good eye. El Morro is the correct spelling. When CalTrans made the signs for the park to place on PCH they misspelled it so rather than change the signs they just adopted the incorrectly spelled name. True story.

Here's one that seems to disappoint a lot of people, including the park staff. BFI does not mean Big F-ing Incline. 25 - 30 years ago there was a trash bin part way up the trail that had the letters BFI on the side. Local mountain bikers just started calling it that.

    Fun fact, no disappointment.

Renaming Mach One some nebulous, generic and totally forgettable name is disappointing.

What is origin of TNA? Get that it means "Tits n Ass" likely but how did it get that name? What about BFG? Telonics (some kind of telecom road originally near there)?

I don't know about TnA but Telonics was the name of the company where the trail ended I believe.

Marie Calendars was once covered with cow pies.

Right. Interesting that they adopted some of the original names like BFI, Missing Link, Elevator, and Rattlesnake but changed others like Mach I, and ITIC.

Anybody remember the Brassiere trail. That was a really long time ago but anyone who was riding in El Moro prior to 2001 will probably remember why Missing Link was named that. There was a gap between Missing Link and Fenceline. The trail just kind ended and dropped to Elevator. After a flaming buzzard (shorted some power wires) started a small fire in that area the park let us complete the final 900 feet to connect the trails. So there's no more missing link on Missing Link. We removed all the barbed wire on Fenceline so there's no more fence on Fenceline. I guess we should start calling it Missing Fence.
One more tidbit. While building the trail in 2001 we were approached by The ranger from LCWP. It turns out that Missing Link and Fenceline are actually on Laguna Coast Wilderness property and not in El Moro. The fence was not the actual property line.

I think T&A is "Theatre and Arts", near where the trail ends.

I remember that fire. We need to start a thread on the history of all of these trails.

I like that different groups call trails by different names. That way I can tell who you ride with.

It looks like he lost concentration and drifted to the edge of the trail. Weird crash.

Most recent edition of Bike magazine covers socal. It mentions the work on lizard, and says T & A and 5-Oaks are next. Oh well...

Rode Lizard(s) today nothing wrong with the work they did. No thread work done on much of the trail, except the steeps which became nasty rutted anyway Getting the brush trimmed back was a big improvement. Nice work thank you.

I agree with dean. What was there before was unsustainable and if we get a big El Nino it would all come down / gotten worse. Think it is fine.
And while I am at it ... I think for most trails named after animals .. the name is singular.... (although I will probably say Lizards till the end of my days)

Rode it on Saturday for the first time since it was opened/reopened. It really is a better trail now. The water ruts at the beginning are gone, giving the trail more "mass appeal." Where before, riding it backwards was a bit grueling, I think it will be more enjoyable now.

May be nice now, but with no maintenance it will probably end up in the same condition it was in couple years. Not trying to be Debbie downer here, but if no one maintained the trail before who's going to do it now? Enjoy it while it lasts I guess. I have to spend a lot of time fixing the luge, usually 2-3 times a month to keep it somewhat nice, this trail is no diffrent in the fact that it's a high traffic trail and will wear out quickly. To me Marie Calendars was a world class trail, it was soo diverse, it was not worth the temporary fix to lizard to loose Marie's permanently. What a shame..
