It looks like the mountains got dusted with frost last night. I'm looking forward to riding.

Nice shot. The storm sounded brutal last night. It's a surprise to start the New Year with such nice riding weather! We are lucky!!!

I think I'm taking the rest of the day off now. Thank you.

A little further south, Sugerloaf mountain with snow (that's the mtn you wind around heading to Cocktail Rock on San Juan Trail). And another pic of further south where Ortega Hwy winds through. BTW, heard Ortega is/was closed due to snow/ice.

SR 74 [IN THE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA AREA]
IS CLOSED FROM 8 MI EAST OF SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO (ORANGE CO) TO
LAKE ELSINORE (RIVERSIDE CO) - DUE TO SNOW - MOTORISTS ARE ADVISED TO
    USE AN ALTERNATE ROUTE

Its closed just east of caspers park, according to whoever answered teh phone at caspers.

wonder if 74 willl open later today/tomorrow. Guess im just riding aliso this afternoon. was thinking about trying to pedal up san juan at least partway till the snow gets too much but i guess not!

btw its 13*f at the peak!
I think today must be the coldest day in socal in at least 5 years.

Hitting up Skyline on DH bikes mid day today.

Probably start around noon and do one run up to Block for a warmup (1000) ft of Climbing then a second run up to either Skinsuit or Wardlow (Another 3000ft of climbing). Full DH bikes. Text me if you want to ride with me and Kyle.....Dirty Drunx!

Any recommendations on what to wear, to stay warm, when it's so cold outside?? I've got plenty of warm weather clothes, but I seem to lack clothing suitable for Mtb riding, while staying warm n comfy. Need serious suggestions, please. I hate not riding around here, but hate being cold, too.

    Layers are key.

On nights into the high 20's, 30's I'd wear:

    Windproof gloves
underarmor (tight fitting long sleeved shirt, breathable)
    long sleeved shirt
    Windproof jacket
    leg warmers (or underarmor-type leggings)
    Thick socks (defeet wooleator)
    Booties
    Balaclava (on downhill)

As the temps were warmer, I'd mix in arm warmers, knee warmers and toe covers...sometimes just wore plastic bags over my socks to block the wind.

All my stuff came from either Target or Performance Bike.

I'd add an extra LS jersey and pair of gloves in the pack, especially if your ride consists of a long climb then a long decent. Get the dry stuff and the windbreaker on before starting down.

Saw Joe Lawwill's Instagram post of him at Holy Jim. Looked like he was riding in Big Bear in dead of winter. I guess a bunch of fallen trees were on the trail as well.

Safe to say San Juan is a no-go for New Year's Day?

Here's what Google shows. Caltrans site says 74 is closed 8 miles east of San Juan Capistrano which puts the closure right about the same place Google shows it stopped, about 1/2 way through Caspers.

i had the bright idea of heading up to kernville to ride today.wind. with my kids. We ended the whiskey flats trails back to the car and it was 37 degrees.... winter gloves and a thin jacket were fine but my feet froze.. need to get those booties on for tomorrow. Kids were mostly fine in the cold... go figure. No snow here though, post up some photos of your rides in the snow

Decided to try going up STT to Luge. Made it about a mile or so past the second little gate on STT. Icy, windy, snowy and muddy! Still an awesome little outing to finish off the year! Lots of people out there with their kids enjoying the weather. Pretty cool! Happy New Year, everyone.

    Snow on Whiting-Luge

Some pics from @11 am on Whiting-Luge route. Mustard not rideable at the time. Went up STT as far as feasible before having to turn around--too much snow/slush/mud. Chilly, sunny, memorable day. As Kingaucho said, Happy New Year. That last pic is Mustard.
