So, I'm now a 1 Up USA Hitch Rack Convert (story w/photos)

I'm shocked to see the bikes take so little damage after seeing the damage to your car!

 

This morning, I saw one of these racks, carrying a MTB, heading North on the I-5 Fwy, through the Santa Clarita Valley. Was mounted on the back of a white BMW wagon. The rack looked lightweight, with clean design and lines. Looks great, as long as you want to transport only one bike.

 

You can add up to 3 more on mine, for a total of 4 bikes.

I have the Thule T2, which I feel is very sturdy. (I'm happy with mine) The 1up does look nice, from what I've seen.

 

I'm a huge fan of the 1up as well. Had mine for about 6 months and it's worth the higher price. I went with the one bike unit and a seperate add on. Didn't feel the need to always have a 2 bike unit on there. Even with the add on, folded up, it doesn't block my plate.

I probably wouldn't go with a 4 bike carrier on a 1.25" receiver, it's too close to the tongue weight limit of that class of hitch. Most likely that's why 1up only advertises up to 3 bikes on their 1.25" compatible rack.

 

Technically... according to 1 up
The Single base rack it has a 1 1/4" base hitch with a 2" converter the recommend max is base single + 2 carriers for a total for 3 bikes
The Double rack which is a 2" hitch can expand up to 4 total
If I were regularly carrying more than one bike I would get the Double Base rack

 

they used to advertise the 1 1/4" rack could be expanded to 4 bikes. I'm guessing they had some issues with people hauling 4 heavy bikes.

 

I have a Thule T2 hitch rack for my 4Runner and this is the only thing I dislike about it.. It blocks the license plate when it's folded up. If I had known about this prior to getting it, I may have spent the extra money on the 1up.

 

New owner. Being stir crazy from healing a messed up arm, I decided to upgrade my bike mobility logistics. Can't wait. They were back ordered for a few days waiting on parts. Just called today and theyre shipping this pm. I got the 2 bike unit just so I can expand to a 4 bike arrangement. Planning on more Mammoth and Northstar carpooling next year. It's gonna be epeeeeeeeeec!

Hands down the best rack out there. Especially with lower cars. I went to a 1up after having a Thule. Best thing ever. I like having the 1-1/4 with the adapter and being able to go back and forth between the two hitch sizes. Thules work, but they are so janky IMO. Also annoying that they always end up rubbing the fork.

Anyone using this? Thoughts concerns? I know a few people using the hitch version and they like it.

 

Yes many of us...probably one of the top racks on the market in terms of quality, performance, ease of use, construction and service but they are expensive unless you look at as an important investment (like using it several times a week like I do. There has been some minor improvements of late... and if you have a dark colored car...look hard at the black anodized... very nice... but even a little more.
Love Mine... if you can't tell....from when it was new... ~2.5 years ago, still works exactly the same and the finish is wearing extremely well seeing as it stays on the car

 

i like the design. i've only seen one in the wild, it holds bikes the same way as the hitch version, friction lock and gripping on the tires.

it's a one piece rail so you can't fold it up any smaller to put away. the rail has a groove underneath so you can mount the carrier to your roof rack however you want. but i think the clamp is limited to the width of cross bar it can accomodate.

 

Actually that is not correct, two piece rail and folds up nicely.
