It will be in the high 90s this time of year. Dont try to run it solo. As you get toward the river it is pretty remote. You might be just fine but you never know. This time of year (usually May to October) I try to wheel higher elevations to avoid some heat. Big Bear, Frazier Mountain/ Miller Jeep trail, Rincon Trail near Kern, and other Eastern Sierras trails. Many of those spots are fairly easy too. We should definitely get a STR group together even if its a day run at Big Bear. I am out of town this weekend though.
weather.com is calling for 93 for sunday, but I'm sure it could get hotter. I want to camp and wheel at bigbear but big bear campsites are really full.
/\/\ You have options- Holcomb Valley There is open country/ primitive camping, so no facilities will be available. The fire regulations in Big Bear don't allow you to have a campfire at this site. From the 18, turn north onto Poligue Cyn. Rd. (3N09). Poligue is due west of the Discovery Center. Take Poligue up to 3N16 and make a right. From 3N16, make a left onto 3N07. If you've reached the Holcomb Valley Campground, you've gone to far on 3N16. Keep right at the intersection of 3N07 and 3N43 to stay on 3N07. Continue to the campsite. 3N07 is a dead end road and the site is couple hundred yards before the end. Hope this helps. Bring your bike too.
Thanks, I was thinking about that and possible yellow post but don't want to do yellow post solo. No I'm not was weird as some people says I am. If I go big bear I'll definitely bring my bike, prime time right now. Who else is going? I want to fit in some easy-medium wheeling time too.
another option is hanna flats. they have 10-15 walk up spots that cannot be reserved online. so if you get up there really early you can usually grab these. even on holiday weekends! i own Big Bear RV rentals. i know a few tricks to get people into sites last minute.
Here's my Jeep Wrangler. Got a really good deal on it. Some slight mechanical and cosmetic issues, but a real head-turner!
So against better judgement I ran mojave road solo. The temp is lower than expected by a little but only saw 2 other cars out. it was fun though, had to take some poser flex shots. Not too shabby for a stock rig with only mild lift, think she got a bit more to give too.
Hey I know what we should plan, a fat bike/4x4 run of mojave. Those of us who are fat and lazy can explore the area with 4x4 and those who wants to pedal can pedal. Fat bike is required. This way bike people won't have to carry all their stuff and 4x4 people gets to slow down and enjoy the exploration while being sag wagons. Bike people can relax and ride and not worry that they have to complete the entire 138 miles or call search and rescue, a lot safer! Kinda like a bike tour. what do you guys think? Obviously this has to be done when it is cool. Pretty sure if donkey goes he will pedal the whole damn thing.
I am down with this. March/ April 2015 would be good temp wise. If we get enough interest it could be a nice run!
Another site i go to some guys did what you describe a couple took 4x4 and campers and a couple peddled quite a bit of the road.Looked like a cool deal
Bump cant believe it it has been a year already and STR is working. Bringing this thread back to life, I'm thinking about going to Death Valley the first weekend of April or Easter weekend. weather suppose to be amazing and hopefully the wild flower is still around. So far it has been a great year for the wild flowers. The hot spring and the race track are the 2 main destination I am thinking of besides wild flower hunting. let me know if you are I terestrd in going, a good/reliable rig is a must. Pretty far from civilization and tow nut don't need to be super hardcore.
Better go quick before the wildflowers die out it's going to be really hot and dry, it's already 100 degrees at Furnace Creek. I'm headed to DV this weekend for 4 days on my moto bike.
