The chain is on there tightly with no chain slap. How would climbing be affected if I ran a 30 or 32 in the front?

Bigger the ring up front the harder it would be on the climbs. You can also play around with the number of chain links and find the "magic link" and do away with the chain tensioner. On my 2009 Rockhopper I was able to do 20 rear and 32 front with a special half link and remove the chain tensioner. Like it better that way.

Cool thanks for the tips....This will be primarily used as a climber at del cerro in PV. Just want to see how it will do. Its pretty terrible on everything else other than climbs. If it doesnt rain this week im going to give it a try and then i'll decide on what gearing I will be doing.

You should be good steppig up to a 30 or 32. I run a stock Kona Unit with a 32F/18R (3.7 Gain Ratio) without an issue in PV. My SS training loop is down Ishibashi, down and up Burma to Barn Owl, down Barn Owl, down Panorama, and up Burma to Del Cerro. Quick local loop to get the blood flowing when I can't get down to OC or up to Agoura/Simi.

My Kona Unit is an awesome addition and my go to bike for XC rides and beach cruising alike.

It wasn't that the tensioner isn't tight, only that its really far from the sprocket and looked like a link could be removed. I'm not big on half links (only because i haven't used them), so, i try to go with the shortest chain possible that will fit. If thats the shortest you can go, or, you plan on adding teeth then disregard.

For gearing, i find anything less than a 3.00 gain ratio seems to be difficult to stand and mash because if its spinny nature. Especially on the loose stuff. That leaves only sitting and spinning up the climbs for me. I don't sit and spin well at all. And spinning 90rpm on the flats while only going 9mph would have me looking for a bigger gear. I know gear selection is a personal preferance, but, that one seems too easy even for my weak legs. Then again, i don't know if you're doing 9mi climbs with an average grade of 15%. Most of my long climbs range from 6-10% like B*, Harding TT, or Indian TT.

Sounds a lot like my ride I do at del cerro. I was planning on trying it this weekend but looks like it might rain. Depending on how it climbs I will try a 30 up front. Thanks for the advice bro,.

SS gearing is always subjective. Find what works for you...ignore the rest.

    My Raijin

Just realized I haven't posted my Raijin on this thread yet. Love this bike! Hopefully it'll carry me through my first single speed VQ next week. Here it is up at Four Corners. image.jpg

And here at Del Cerro on a weekday ride

Here's my other Single Speed Beater. I forget what year but its a mid 90's specialized hardrock comp with some mods. Painted up the frame myself. Not pictured are my NOS XT brakes and new carbon fiber raiser handle bar. weighs 22 lbs.

I'm running 28x11 which puts me right under 51 gear inches, (55 is standard for BMX.) I can't quite clear every ascent on the Fullerton Loop yet, but I think the gearing is in the right place for it. Every time I go to the Loop, I HaB less than before.
