Why is this a Big Deal?

Because it was my first ride back after breaking my wrist (scaphoid) on 5/5.

It was a road ride, but that's OK not cleared for dirt (doc is being conservative, new screw). It was, about 45 miles, with a few hills and some nice flats. Had some good spots and some spots where I felt like a slug, but good hard work on several section got the heart rate up into the 160s (pretty high for me).

I did my up Laguna Canyon time trail about 3 minutes off pace but not too bad (great place to test yourself about 7 miles gentle uphill, 20-25 minutes of full effort).

3 hours was about it got tired, wrist a little tired and it was getting hot...

It was beautiful.... nice big sweat, got that cool sensation of self powered speed again!

I love bikes, I love riding them, and I love to see people riding them, all kinds and it was great to be out there again.

To everyone else on the Mend...work hard, keep the head up, and you will get back too!

That was easy according to my brain...I was doing some running and hiking while I was off the bike... Well not that much really, So I was thinking longer but about half way reality set in So I shortened the route.

Actually smart for a change. ;)

Congrats. I chatted with you right before your unfortunate ride. We spoke about getting hurt and not recovering as quickly as we were younger. Hope to see you riding soon.

Hmmm not sure...see how next weekend goes.

Yes that was a bit of a prophetic discussion, I was not feeling strong that evening and made a bad choice.

I too am recovering from a broken wrist. Ironically, I've noticed that road riding bugs it much more than mountain biking.
The angle of my wrist on the road bars is more pronounced than it is on my mtn bike bars.

Good luck and don't get lazy with your rehab exercises. :)

Yeah I can see that, doc said he wanted me to stay away from the impacts...tried to argue a bit but he was pretty adamant.

Ain't that the truth, some days I am a little more diligent than others.

    Broken Scaphoid as well...

I don't post much but I wanted to throw my two cents out there on the scaphoid recovery as I have just gone through it. I broke mine May 1 (Telonics) and was in a hard cast till Aug. 1. Doc was adamant that I be very cautious if I was going to ride after he took off the hard cast. He gave me a soft cast (heavy duty wrist brace) that I was to wear through August. I did a ride 1.5 weeks ago in Lake Tahoe and Mammoth, I wore the brace on both rides and it was nice to have the extra support. I did 2 more rides last week at Whiting and I'm finding the more I use the wrist the better its feeling. It is amazing that a bone that small takes that long to heal. I have been a 3 day a week rider for a long time so its been difficult not riding, and anything you try to substitute it with just isn't the same as going out and riding with your buddies. I feel like other than some light stiffness, I am over the hump on this injury.
    Hang in there.

JMS Glad to hear you are well on your way. Question did you get a screw put in or all natural. My Doc was super cautious too, he said if I re-broke it with the screw in it...well I would be screwed ;)...
I am going for my first real workout tonight too, I am pretty stoked, more sweat and strength. The more I have been using my wrist over the last couple weeks the better too. I have a soft cast that I use when I trail run just in case I take a biff...

    Miss AJ,
You blew past me one hot morning on Moro Ridge while I was hiking with my friendly weights in my backpack, you were gone before I could muster a Hi.

    Screws...

For whatever reason my doc wasn't keen on using screws for this injury. He did offer that if I wanted to do it, it would shorten my recovery by 2-3 weeks or something like that (2-3 weeks isn't worth surgery for me)
