I started riding when I was 15 and rode the VQ that year and the next year and the next year. So last year when I left for college I missed it. It killed me cuz it was my favorite race and a tradition for me. So this year since the race was held later it was on my spring break. I had to fly out for it! ANd I really needed some CA dirt and sunshine after this winter in the south. The only thing was due to ,school, work, bike problems and weather I had barely ridden in October and november and not at all in December, just once in Jan. and not at all in Febaury. But I really wanted to ride the event still and you dont ever lose your endurance. So I started riding again 2 weeks before the event and rode sections of the course and suprisinly felt extremely strong. I helped Chris Vargas get all the last minute stuff done the week of the event. My dad dropped me off at 5 am at Blackstar sat. It was great to see so many old friends. I was worried about the cold and darkness since it was so early but it was not as bad as i thought. I rode to beeks with Gene and Erick Brown, 2 fellow warriors. I felt strong and was having fun! I often hollored out of pure joy and fun on the course. I had lots of conversations with old and new friends. The motorway was a way fun DH. The only thing was I had new gloves the were rubbing on my hands and eventually gave me blisters. It made the downhills painful. I felt stronger than ever going up to the peaks but I was starving and stopped alot to eat. Holy Jim was so much fun! WHen I was headed up trabuco I started to feel fatigued and it was quite warm. But all in all not to bad. I did not feel well enough to eat a burger at the top. I was tired coming down trabuco so I took my time to the finish so I would not wreck or flat. I ended up surprsing myself by finishing in less than 8 hours with almost no riding prior to the race. The conditions this year were amazing and by far the best ever. It was an honor suffering and counting coup with everyone! Ya Ta Hey

To the person who expressed the opinion that my beach cruiser ride of CC in support of Elaine was a selfish act and/or poaching of the system. My response: Any/all opinions are welcome. Informed opinions are the best since they are based on facts rather than assumptions ... they are stronger opinions actually. Here is some more information

    1) Arrived at the event with 09 CC DNF plate turned backwards on bike with "Dust Easter 1" written on it.
    2) Walk up to trailer with Elaine and was told by WS to remove plate, cant start until later. I did & said OK
    3) Walked her to the starting line and was approach by WS - they asked me a brief question then waived me through.... so I went through and started
    4) Was asked 7 days prior to the race to ride with Elaine. Brought my own supplies
    5) We stayed in the back of the pack for obvious reasons
    6) Motorway cutoff - got my own supplies and refilled
    7) 4 Corners - didnt need it but asked for 1 pkg of crackers
    8) SPeak - was offered water from camel back but declined. Then as last riders we were offered water from truck sweep. We accepted and thanked
    9) At HJaid I did have Hot Tamales, 1 banana, 1 orange. Didnt need it but felt accepted by staff/riders having received so much support/encouragement over the 9hrs
    10) I have all my VQ feathers & plates professionally framed and mounted in my office. They are meaningful. This year I have no feather, no 1st beach cruiser finish, no finish at all. I did share a perfect day with a friend.
    11) Send sincerely thank you and donation intent to WS - response was none necessary support of Elaine was enough

Cheers - Congratulations to all riders!

    Here is my opinion

    You are da man!

You didn't poach the event in my opinion, you were supporting someone amazing doing something awe inspiring. I was some what in the same boat as you even though I had a CC plate but I was also riding as/in support of Doris who is the oldest female finisher of the event. But unlike you I didn't ride a bike that would make the ride crazy difficult.

BTW I was the guy with black jersey and white helmet trading places with you all the way from the start to 4 corners. I didn't even finish the event like you, I had some issues and quite at 4 corners to watch Doris and others at the finish.

Completing CC isn't something just anyone can do. But you did it with a ridiculously hard bike like a beach cruiser and supporting someone achieving something so amazing make you OK in my book!

Although the bib look was a bit......different then again so was the beach cruiser.

You are still superman to me!:bang:

Oh yeah - thanks ... enjoyed our trail time for sure. No worries about not finishing it takes heart to show up for VQ/CC and ride the day whatever the experience brings. BIG Congrats to Doris! See you on the trails and at the starting line in 2011!

The guy I was referring to was not on a Beach Cruiser. He was riding a silver Turner.

Sorry about the confusion.....the rider in question is picture #192 (Steve Morgan?) on Eric Foltz's website:

From what I understand you were given permission to ride with Elaine well before the event.

    I edited my original post.

One big difference for me from last year to this year:

Last year when the CC was over, I was burnt out and didn't feel much urge to ride for a while, and if I did it was fun loops at Aliso, Whiting or Luge.

This year I wish there was another CC this weekend so I'd have another crack at bettering my time! Stoked!

Just curious, how does one convince oneself that they can do (or even attempt) the CC and where do I find someone who will ride with me? :?:

There is a difference between riding as an event poacher, riding a few miles as you link trails together, stopping to cheer on others, and riding as support. You obviously were the later; I don't recall having anyone saying/thinking anything different. FWIW, I was the one to give you water.

A few pics for you--the first is Elaine and her pacer crew, the second is Elaine as she finished the last climb of the CC, to the towers (note her crew waiting patiently and cheering her on from the top)

Nancy, I'm sure you would have a bunch of people willing to ride with you if you agreed to do the CC, if you don't find anyone, I'll ride with you.

I think you have the drive and the capability to do it! Just sign up denmo! One stipulation. You will lose some sleep to sign up for the event as it sold out in a few minutes after the sign up opened up. Plan on staying up til midnight when it opens for sign up and make sure to complete the entry by 12:01 and you are good to go!

I don't think you of all people would have a hard time finding people to train with.

Now, if you can convince Rog to enter as well, it would be awesome to see you two on a DH tandem completing the course!:bang:

I think you could find a few people to do it. I would consider it, pending how my work schedule looks.

+1 to Denmo on going for it. I'd be glad to invite you along on some training rides, and I'm sure about 100% of the STR family feels the same way.

Oh wait - maybe only 99.7% agree, since you're a moderator and all ;)
