    WOW.....thats a statement.

Personally I'd put it down to the fact we have seen what 'wars' do and don't do, and have learnt that you can resolve things pretty succesfully in a more civilized and peaceful manner.

Don't get me wrong, I spent 7 years in the Royal Navy, and am a patriot to Queen and Country......but just feel we have moved on from "Who's go the biggest arsenal !!"

You know what's sad? When there was a call to serve during World War II, guys committed suicide when the military had to turn them down because of health reasons or whatever. Things are not like they used to.

People are way too sheltered nowadays and I wish all high school seniors could seriously spend 6 months in a 3rd world country and do service there. People take way too much for granted and have no idea the sacrifices previous generations have made for us.

    Very well said!

I do disagree with you on one little point.

Our nation is forged on war just like any other nation. Not to acknowledge that is lying to ourselves.

The revolutionary war, the indian war(genocide, this land was theirs), Civil war, the Mexican war(all of southwest), the forceful take over of hawaii, WWII(us territory of Guam).......not to mention Vietnam war, Korean war, afghan, iraq, secrete wars of CIA.........

We are NOT all high and almighty as we are trying to project. We are NOT better than anyone else. Our officials thinks we are better than others and because of that we got ourself into tons of trouble and lost all our friends/allies. US and people of US need a very large piece of humble pie.#-o

We may have(double it from actions of our leaders, largest arsenal of nuclear weapons) but there are other people are still living in the first century.#-o US and Briton may have moved on from take over the world and colonialism but there are people who still take the crusade to heart(yeah it's been a while)! But it's much easier to hit someone and say sorry then be the one who got hit and forget what happened.

One would think they would spend some time studying the steel from the only steel building collapse in the history of the world, much like they study airplane failures, instead it was hauled off, melted down and turned into a Warship! Brilliant! How patriotic... Now lets go get those bad guys who live in the dessert in our new boat... oh, wait, um, uh, yeah...

Hilarious. Take a minute and look at what kind of boat it is. When loaded it has 3000 Marines on board ready to get "those bad guys who live in the desert."

Hopefully those marines are outfitted with some nice mountain bikes. They've got some hills and chunk out there ya know!

If they had bikes they could really get out there and search the back country for foot prints, tracks and find these terreristas.

I'm not knocking our armed forces. Both my Dad and Grandfather were Marines. I have a lot of respect for the service. I just think it's a B.S. PR spin to claim that the USS New York is made from the Twin Towers. Gimme a break. The steel from the towers was melted down in China.

Besides, wouldn't it be faster to get 3,000 marines into the center of a desert via air?

in case anyone is not aware the middle east is guarded by our navy(with the help of england france and others)

yes we have men in country but the fastest support for airstikes is the navy aircraft carriers we have off the coast(ive seen this in person)... the only air strips in country are used as medical evacuations, supplies, as well as troop transport... its nice to see something new built for the ospreys and another first line of defense

    No.

The logistics of a mass air transit of fully loaded marines would take more time and resources than a ship. Plus aircraft have to land somewhere, ships can anchor or just float off the coast almost indefinately.

Additionally ships offer support services that transport aircraft cant such as cover fire, close air support, medical and repair facilities and can operate as a SAR platform for the fallen

Amazing how a thread about a new ship turns into a political debate. Does anyone ride bikes around here? ](*,)
