I was actually awake at 12 - had just got home from the Pearl Jam show and my phone alarm went off - I was able to sign up for CC right from my iPhone. Good thing I did as I was a bit inebriated and was going to wait until morning.

I am pretty stoked that I got a spot. I used to live in Lake Forest and ride all of those trails 20 years ago. I have lived in Ventura County since then and have never been back to my old OC stomping grounds.

I better start getting some miles in now...

I have a very irrelevant question, but it bugs me, especially since I'm now signed up for the Counting Coup.

Is it pronounced Coo or Coop?

Also, while I'm at it, I know where the Vision Quest name comes from, but what does Counting Coup actually mean?

Mostly Symbolic, but Courage and Valor for accepting a challenge.

Counting Coup refers to the winning of prestige in battle by the Plains Indians of North America. Warriors won prestige by acts of bravery in the face of the enemy, and these acts could be recorded in various ways and retold as stories.
Any blow struck against the enemy counted as a coup, but the most prestigious acts included touching an enemy warrior, with the hand or with a coup stick, then escaping unharmed. Counting coup could also involve stealing from the enemy. Risk of injury or death was required to count coup.
The phrase "counting coup" can also refer to the recounting of stories about battle exploits.
The term is of French origin from the noun coup (pronounced /ku/) which means a hit, a blow or a strike. The expression can be seen as referring to "counting strikes".
Coups were recorded by notches in the coup stick, or by feathers in the headdress of a warrior who was rewarded with them for an act of bravery.

So does anyone know if Lance managed to get his entry in before it sold out?

    Try his publicist

Lance is a racer, this is not a race but a supported challenge. If he is in I'm sure the media would know before anyone behind the scenes would leak it. Last thing the volunteers need is the media blocking access for emergency vehicles...

PM sent. Is there a CC wait list as well? I'm interested in taking either spot...VQ or CC. Thanks!

I would have had a spot, but registering for Active.com slowed me down. :(

:?: Guys, read through the thread and you'll find that there is a waiting list. 2010 VQ/CC Waiting List

This is why I won't maintain one this year.

WS was making 46,666.67/hr for the time the CC was on sale. The VQ was only getting them 27,925.53/hr. Of course it is far from being profit. Not trying to make any point, just bored at work. Hope everyone has a good race..I mean ride.
As for the DNS issue. I DNS'd in 2008 because I got sick right before the race. WS gave me a slot in the 2009 event.

Anybody have any experience with the waiting list from years past? What are the chances of moving into a race spot? I'm on the list, but have no clue what to expect.

    Wow!! That's cool!
I got the flu the week of 2009 CC, but figured I'd give it a go, only to DNF at the top of BS. I should have won an award for 1st DNF, which I'm sure I was.

I was joking here even though it'd be a lot of fun if he did sign up and race/ride.

As the date gets closer, you're more likely to move up. One of the reasons Gene and the Warriors won't do the wait list is because of the difficulty getting a hold of some of the people on the wait list, or they change their mind, they're not in shape, etc. I don't know the total number of people who exchanged spots, but I recall it being pretty high.

    You'd be surprised!!!

Thanks. Its my motivation to ride more all winter. I'll gain 10 lbs without the CC on my calendar!

    Issues related to the event

Some have suggested that the Society give Lance a comp if he doesn't make it in the event and wished to participate.

Tinker has in the past requested a comp after it has been sold out and was politely told to pound sand and I assume Lance would recieve the same response. I understand they also DO NOT want the chaos of the press that would accompany Lance's participation as was previously stated by another poster.

They may be great athletes, but it seems the Warrior's Society believes that they should abide by the same rules as the general public; get your ass up and pay the fee or buy a spot from someone that has dropped out.

As far as the events selling out, some have suggested that since the demand is so great perhaps the prices for the event should be raised since the participating level cannot be raised due to Forest Service permit requirments.

It is my understanding that the Warrior's Society would rather not raise the prices because they don't want/need the money and do not want to discourage those that have a hard time paying the exsiting fee from participating.

The current process for signing up is fair, everyone has the same chance to sign up - and it seems to me that why change what is fair and working.

Wow. These puppies get sold out quick. That's awesome. The organizers should consider a VQ/CC #1 and VQ/CC #2 since space is limited and because these are very popular. If you missed the first go around you have a chance for the 2nd event. They can be scheduled on back-to-back weeks. Just a thought. Probably easier said than done. :bang:

1 VQ/CC is enough work.....trying to stack to in consecutive weekends would kill us......remember, everybody working the event.....is a volunteer.

I suppose you could consider The Traverse as VQ#2. Not sure about CC#2, maybe Rwanda and Toad Festival. Toad has a really neat shirt to go with it but nowhere near the pain or commitment you get with CC. Same excellent support from WS though.

It is not like the event needs any "super" riders to sell out the event. I for one am somewhat sad to see how popular the event has become. The first time I signed up I think I registered around Thanksgiving. Now, you have to sign up at 12:01 the day it opens. What used to be somewhat of a local ride has become a huge event for most of So Cal and even beyond. It makes me wonder what made this ride so crazy popular within the last 4 years? I have to think this web site has a lot to do with it. I am curious how many of the participants are members on STR?

Don't get me wrong, I love the event and all the hard work put in by the WS. Oh, and I was lucky enough to get a VQ spot so see you out there.
