New member from San Fernando Valley. Other than being much cooler than during the day and because of work, why do people do night rides? This is something I am interested in, mostly because I work during the day and weekends can get busy... Also, most park trails are off limits after sunset, according to the signs posted... Thanks, Ken
Riding at night is a totally new experience! Even if you've been on a trail a million times, riding at night feels like it's a whole new trail! Because youre relying on lamps, you can't even see that far ahead (especially if youre going fast) so you have to think FAST and be on your toes! Also the cold air just feels awesome with the silence.
Because the trail that you would normally ride and memorize every rock, ruts and turns will totally become a different trail.... there is more thrill at night as you can only see what your light can see ..... things that goes through your mind: cougars, snakes, spiders, bigfoot, ghosts and some other stupid things like face planting on a rock .... simply put... more adrenaline
yes, county/state parks are closed to night riding w/o a permit, but national forests allow it. get yourself a good light & go have fun for the reasons already listed!
There isn't any trail traffic... Oh wait, riding at night is extremely dangerous, illegal and bad for the environment. Please only ride during daylight hours.
:welcome: from the Crescenta Valley! In Hawaii, the largest groups of riders in our club were for night rides. Mostly we did them on full moon nights. There is no other feeling like night riding. It simply puts any trail into a new light (pun intended), hard to explain, but once you do a night ride, you will know. But it does require one to be on top of their game. It's not for lazy riding by any means. Give it a go...
Rawhead, your signature is awesome! Night riding sounds pretty fun. Sounds like I would be swallowing some bugs on my way down too... hehe, for now, I guess I will strap on some Mag lights on my helm and go Ghetto style. Those dang lights are $$$, almost as much as my bike. Thanks.
If youre gonna be using a maglight, you might as well get the DKG bar mounts for it. http://www.dkg-cnc.com/bicycle.html
grab two more 3watter flashlights for the handlebar... I use them and will keep using them.... they're cheap! that looks way better than my ZIPTIES
LOL, never knew such mount existed... They make mounts for everything!! Here I was thinking duck taping it to my helm...
Yea, what Drop D said also, if youre gonna ghetto it, use zip ties. My friend zip tied a mag to his helmet and it worked ok. Duct tape will move and leave sticky stuff on your helmet.
Ya but well worth it as you'll find out when you out ride your beem and can't see. Some lights work well enough for commuting or fireroads, but for fast descents a good on both helmet and bars makes a lot of difference IMHO.
Junta, Riding the Verdugos, and especially the San Gabes at night is AWESOME! There's really nothing like it. You and everyone else is welcome to come out and ride with OTB any Tuesday or Thursday night. See the calendar below for more info. You'll have a blast. Hope to see you soon. http://otbmbc.com/calendar/calendar.cgi
That is not a problem. OTB has many different levels of riders. If you ride regularly with OTB, you will get in shape and also become a better overall rider at the same time. Win-win. The Brown Mtn.-El Prieto ride tomorrow night, 7/23 is a great way to break in with OTB. Some of us prefer to climb El P rather that riding up the fireroad. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions. Hope to meet and ride with you soon.
I used to use the headband for my pair of mini mags. Outdoor World in Fontana? has the Blackburn Voyager 3.0 on their perpetual half price clearance sale for $14.97. I say perpetual as they have been at that price since February and as late as a few weeks ago. The mech there told me in June that they might be getting rid of the bike shop there as it hasn't brought in the biz they had hoped but were going to see how the rest of this year goes. But the prices are good. Might be able to score some deals in the meantime. I only hit them on the few occasions I happen to be driving by.
