    Half a Year of Mayhem
That's one way to describe developments in pro cycling since May. And it keeps getting crazier.
Spanish legal authorities have ruled that nothing turned up by the doping investigation called Operation Puerto may be used by anyone anywhere to sanction cyclists. At last count, 58 pros had been implicated in a Madrid-based doping network.
Nine of the riders were prohibited from riding the Tour de France on suspicion that they were users of illegal performance-enhancing drugs or blood-boosting methods. Included were Tour favorites Jan Ullrich and Ivan Basso. They've been out of competition since.
Now they can race again -- if they can find teams. ProTour squads remain opposed to signing riders who are under suspicion.
Meanwhile, the International Cycling Union (UCI) says the Spanish judicial decision gives it no choice but to allow the riders back in the sport. That makes the UCI unhappy and critical of "the highly confusing general context of Operation Puerto."
That could be called an understatement.
The UCI has even granted a ProTour license to Manolo Saiz for the 2007 season. Saiz, once manager of the Liberty Seguros team, was the first big name implicated in the Operation Puerto investigation, supposedly having been nabbed with bags of frozen blood and a suitcase full of money.
Now Saiz and the 58 riders are off the hook. For now, anyway. The UCI says it will still bring sanctions if and when Spanish officials declare that any riders or team personnel are guilty as once charged.

Okay, Frank, go ahead and make your comment here. Then, Dean and Jose can chime in, too.

That sucks for those guys. I don't get the whole guilty until proven innocent thing in cycling.

What do you expect? This situation is brought to you by the same people you brought you The Spanish Inquisition and the Slaughter of the Aztecs. They have had practice. I think the only people who could be more effective at overlooking proper judicial proceedings would be the Germans. But we all know what happened the last time we let them run anything. Waffen SS death squads on bikes, anyone?

I think Phat is kidding. IIRC, he's already admitted to riding a road bike occasionally.

    moving on

Can't you guys leave this alone. Besides the Road v. MTB is so last week- I hear the real beef is those guys with water bottles instead of camelbacks or was it tubes instead of UST Either way I got my angst set on those with flat bars:p
