Why are some people sugesting heavier FR/DH Wheelsets when he was asking for a light weight AM wheelset?

What ever you do I would have your wheels made by a reputable shop; like The Path. The rest depends on your budget.
    Hubs:
Hopes, Hadleys, Kings. (least to most expensive)

    Rims:
819s, 521s, DT 5.1s, Stans Flows. You choose.

You can also loose considerable weight with your choice of spokes.

Spend as much as you can now and they will last you. I have had the same Hadley hubs for about 5 years. Still going strong.

Hope Pro II hubs - Best blend of reliability/weight/price on the market IMO

DT 5.1 rims - Heavy enough for serious DH, light enough for AM use, and you'll never pinch-flat.

DT 14/15g spokes - Stronger/lighter than straight guage.

DT brass nipples - Worth the 25g or whatever to be able to true your wheels 3 years down the road.

I call BS on that. I have and know a number of other people who have pinch flatted with 5.1s.

Fine, it's a bit of an exaggeration, but I've never flatted - just dented the sidewall :D It's well known they're really soft, and that's why a lot of people like them for DH.

I also ride Mavic 823's...very impressive strength and not a bad price.

I do understand that reasoning but wouldn't that make it more of a FR wheel rather than an AM wheel? Since he was asking about an AM wheelset and didn't mention the size of the jumps and drops I was assuming he was talking about 2-3 footers, not hucking big air.

thnx again for all the input here.. I have been following up all your leads

    I haven't heard any mention of SUN-RNGLE rims/wheelsets yet :?:

..would an Equalizer or Drift setup be worth the investment? :-k

..could MTX hoops be an option to consider for an AM wheelset build being that they are the same weight as the Transition32's?

    ..please enlighten me 8-[

in regards to this I would have to say that if the scale of riding written out looks like this: XC-AM-FR-DH ..I would have to say I want to climb in the blue and decend in the red on this wheelset ..I hope this is possible on my wheelset budget :-s

..hope that made some sense :-k

I've been rocking some hope hubs laced to spank subrosa rims and they have been amazing. I want to say they came out to around 2000 grams.

I had them laced up at www.dropnzone.com for 5 bills

I've had these wheels a little over a year on my Bottlerocket mainly ride Fontana and the Big Bear lifts and they take the beating all day long.

I had the 150 version of the hubs on Equalizer, i hated the hubs. The spacers for the front sucked for putting wheel on. Having had a 20mm roof rack i took front wheel off every time so it got annoying fast. The Spacer for the rear 150 hubs was even worse.

So were not taking big jumps or drops? I dont see it but what kind of weight range are you in and what kind of bike are we talking.

    good question..

not too big on this bike.. this will be my Fullerton loop (min) to Turnbull Canyon (max) bike.. I have my SX Trail for Snow Summit to W3BB :-$ runs and the my V10 build is almost ready to roll \\:D/

I'm 180#s without my gear ..which obviously varies quite a bit depending on the trail, climate, and duration of ride. As for the bike build the OP was based on, it's an 06' StumpJumper frame up that has my attention @the moment 8-[

IMO then I would not get anything over much 2000 grams. Those used XT wheels would be a nice deal. Maybe something with 819s.
