Would love to get a used one on the cheap (1080p) Bigger is always better, but I don't want to go lower than a 32"

I don't care about having the best brand really (I know quality may suffer, but I have never had a full HD TV before and probably wont have any HD channels). Actually, that last thought makes me thing I should just settle for 720p/1080i. I am just going to use it for watching regular DVDs, I don't have any blue ray discs. Costco has a sceptre 32" 1080p for $450. Walmart has a vizio 32" 1080p for $500.

Are those good deals or can anyone on here show me better! I really am not into this whole TV thing so don't laugh at me because I don't know what I am talking about.

I just picked up a 32" TV tonight. I looked at Circuit City, thinking since they were going out of business they would have the deals, but ended up at Sears. Got a Proscan, I know, not the best, but only $350 with a built in DVD player! Same set at Circuit City was $450.

I've had the sceptre for about 6 months now and I really like it. I use it to play xbox, play dvds, and just watch tv and everything looks great, better than nothing... I bought mine at microcenter for about $550.

You'll always get what you pay for.

I've gotta Westinghouse, the "waterfall" inputs are much cleaner than the competition. It may cost a little more but Best Buy is my choice, no pressure, easy credit, competitive sales and coupons, and so far have honored every exchange or warranty without complaint.

For the price range you are seeking resolution is makes virtually no difference on picture quality compared to contrast. Essentially anything under a grand will work great as a monitor but there is a good reason higher priced sets still sell and it's because they look much better. Walmart's okay, but I would go to the Swap meet or roll the dice on Craig's before setting foot in Costco or Fry's again. Check out tiger direct as well but don't spend too much time on it there are plenty of options from $4-600 so just charge the one with the best picture and take advantage of the deferred interest, same as cash deals. It's actually good for your score and if your properly budget or put the money in a savings account to pay it off You could come out actually EARNING interest on the transaction.:-k

End note, I use the 32 as a monitor and currently want larger for the downstairs as it's not much larger than an old square tube when the letter box is factored in.

We've had the Vizeo 32" 720p/1080i LCD for almost 2 years now. Great TV for the price.

Oh man. where to start? First, go 1080p if you can. You wont regret it later. Second, if you don't have HD channels, no worries! Pick up an optimizing dvd player to watch your vids. You are looking at about 85 bucks from Costco. (They fill in the pixels that a non-HD DVD does not have, pushing it closer to HD) Check out Circut City and check out Fri's. Oh, and make sure that you are running HDMI cables, but don't go and buy the $60 Monster ones, the no-namer HDMI cables that you can pick up from Fri's or Amazon work great.

    Good Luck!!

I love fry's, but you better know what you are looking for. Not really good salesmen, but I also hate salesmen so there you go.

I got an Olevia 37" lcd 3 years ago. Was by far the best deal at the time and after doing a lot of research I found they use LG screens in my model. There aren't a whole lot of screen manufacturers and some of the cheaper TV's use high quality screen with cheaper components. I think the best thing to do is compare the picture side by side.

1080p vs. 1080i won't really matter too much on a 32" screen, these thing really show up at like 60". 720p would probably even be fine, but you should be able to get a 1080p at a low price point.

If you want to comparison shop check out ecost.com, they have some great deals - but they may be refurbs.

There are some great AV forums out there that give great reviews of specific TV's, I forget the one I was checking out when I was looking....

    Good luck.

I also have a Olevia but a 32" and I love it. Have had it for almost a year now and haven't had any problems with it.

Shopping and comparing I bought a Sony Bravia at Fry's for $300 less than Best Buy.

I've bought a few things at BB but I'm always irritated by their price match challenge. To avoid price matching they had camcorders made with unique model types so matching was impossible.

    Why a 32

Like I said a 32 will work good for a monitor but for 1080p I am personally shopping from 42' and up because the picture is not that much larger than a standard tube TV. On the other hand text is much larger, and for watching porno/you tube vids 720 is all you will need unless you have a bitchin Video card.:bang:

As far as questions of preference, after > a decade in service I would rather be treated as "Sir" and shop in an environment that does not resemble or feel like a third world street bazaar. Specifically

Fry's; Most of the "deals" advertised are reconditioned, Last years, and/or a lower end model there buyers picked up at salvage (that's why there is always a line for returns when you walk in). The store layout is overwhelming, atrocious, and swarming with sleazy commissioned salesmen. A funny side note is that when buying computers for my business I went in intentionally wearing jeans and a hoodie and left the suit at home to try them out and nearly died of loneliness after half an hour. Best buy on the other hand had better prices on superior merchandise with fantastic (12 mos deferred) terms, and more important I was listened to and understood within minutes. For tech parts I go online to Tiger Direct and just get it shipped to my door, I have walked out of Fry's the last two times because they did not actually have what I had needed.

Costco; Selection is limited to odd brands because they cannot use nearly as much leverage as Wal-Mart, you will never find the latest and greatest because nothing is ever bought in small lots. I shopped there for about two years business and personal and there was no benefit in either price or convenience. If ever in the market for a five gallon bucket of Mayo I'll go to Sam's Club.

Enough bitching, I have brakes to bleed.

First of all, Vizio and Sceptre are like the Huffy and Next of mountain bikes. Just remember that you get what you pay for. Like most replies, you really don't need 1080p if you're going 32". As far as 1080p is concern, there aren't any channels, providers (Dish, DirecTV, cable, etc) that is broadcasting in 1080p and probably won't be for a while. Even Bluray are not TRUE 1080p except for a few video games because movies are not recorded in 1080p only 1080i or 720p. Your Bluray player then upconverts it to 1080p, which really doesn't make much of difference. To the average eyes that have little experience in HD, it is difficult to distinguish the difference between 720p and 1080i. There have been many arguments that 720p is clearer than 1080i and vice versa. I have a Sony 60" 1080p and have had HD tv for about 8 years now and I still can't tell the difference between 720p and 1080i as far as clarity. Now, if you're planning on purchasing a low quality brand like Vizio and Sceptre that has 1080p capability, then I would recommend that you go with a higher quality brand with 720p for the same price. You'll definitely notice that the 720p by Sony/Toshiba/Sharp is much better quality than the 1080p by Vizio/Sceptre. What you also look for is the rate/speed that the picture refreshes, ie 2ms, 8ms, etc. The faster the rate the better it is for watching sports programs or programs that have fast moving pictures so that there is minimal ghosting affect and blurring. In summary, if you're looking to spend under $500 bucks, then buy a good quality tv with a good reputation at 720p and don't waste your money on a cheap brand that is 1080p.

I went ahead and splurged and got a samsung 52" one.

I am buying a home in like june/july and was going to buy a 52" for the house when I got it so I decided to just get the 52 now and not waste the money on a smaller TV just to sell the smaller one and get a big one in a couple months. Plus, it was on sale so I get a decent deal. Best I was able to find atleast. I got the Samsung LN52A550, so if anyone finds that for cheaper than 1500 within the next 30 days let me know because they have a 30 day price guarentee!
