Funny thing about pain is that it reminds you (constantly for some) of your mortality. I think it makes you honest by allowing one to choose whether or not to do something about it or merely fade into the twilight of defeat. With that preface I can explain why I've spent the last week using my other hand to open doors and unbutton my pants. The intention was to increase range of motion and muscle mass in an area affected by a compound fracture years back. Trouble was the bent over reverse dumbbell flys aggravated a hairline fracture sustained on the Ojai ride about 6 weeks ago. The resultant swelling and existing soft tissue damage from a half dozen other untreated fractures and severe sprains on my left side is putting pressure on the carpal nerves which still has my ring finger numb. Unlike the other fairly straight forward joints of the body Wrists and ankles take minimum 4-6 weeks just to get back to normal and cannot be easily isolated day to day. It will be next week before I can even begin squeezing a ball to build strength, and 2 more weeks after before attempting wrist curls or any other movement with 3 lb dumbbells. Probably 2 months till I can again ride aggressively or hit upper body exercises without just making things worse. Luckily I am no stranger to pain or Re-hab, really ought to actually see a doctor someday but specialists will remain out of reach even if insured due to "pre-existing" conditions. Anybody in sports injury that does not mind cash in lieu of paperwork?
Sorry to hear that you are sidelined. And I have a question, did you breathe at all while you were typing the post? I was turning blue while reading it.
C'mon you're hurting me.... As you may have guessed by the nature of the injury I am thinking faster than I can type.
And it reminds you more and more as you get older. I used to blow off minor injuries and pain figuring it will get better or go away soon enough. Not any more. I worked 3-4 weeks and continued to ride with an injury to my lower leg and ended up in the hospital. From now on I'll get a diagnosis if need be and take the time to heal. Take the time and let it heal. You'll be back on the bike before you know it.
