i was sidelined on how wrecked it was out there. i rode yesterday afternoon, and could not believe all that deep mud, it's hard for that section to dry out without proper sunlight. i found the ride past that to be marginal. IMO after the ride, Whiting should be closed for a few more weeks. the spring heat needs to work it's magic and hopefully dry the place up. i was tripping out on all those washed out sections everywhere. the deer were all out which is always cool to see.

I don't know if there's a statute of limitations on mud pits where trails are supposed to be.. but MY BIKE keeps getting Muddy as hell, and "I Can't Take It ANYMORE!!!"

This place has been a swamp for over a month, and I'm not sure why.

So I fixed it. Presumably. At least until the next storm..

Here's a 'before' shot. It was a little too dark to get an after shot (@ 7:00pm). But the trail stays on the left and the water 'hopefully' stays on the right. Apologies to swamp lovers..

I've been climbing the backside and either doing cactus or running back the way I came. I do this to avoid the mud.

ah - thanks SO MUCH Jim! The smell was the worst part. They had done some filling in by the back gate on the way out by Wahoo's - I keep thinking this is the one trail that get soo much use and there was a TON of sand just beyond that filled the cement drainage ditch - I'd been willing to hit with a shovel - but I don't have your fancy pass and FS approval.

But the plank is a fun 'skinny' - flexi and all, with a muddy penalty for failure.

As for cookies, I'm sure you're good for a dozen ;) Tink, I can pick up Jim's tab!

EDIT: Tink you beat me to it!

I can't take credit for the 'bridge,' but I did reset it today since it looked like someone had pulled it out.

I hope the repair holds.. expect it to be spongy in a couple spots as it all dries out.

i assumed that there would have been at least some sort of crew work that had been done by this time. i have not even bothered to ride most of the park in a few weeks, sticking to STT/Old Camp. at least they could fill in the really wet spots with sand and pack it down some. i have seen people doing stuff in the past. i would not mind going in there with a little shovel and fixing up the mucky spots. does the parks services let you do that since it is county property?

No, you either have to be a TAV with SHARE which has access to the tools there or contact Vickie Malton the Senior Ranger at Whiting Ranch. 949-923-2244.

Gene's right. You need permission to do trail work in the County Parks. I got it by contacting the Ranger, filling out an application, and taking an orientation/training course to become an Adopt-A-Park volunteer.

Thanks for wanting to help out. Based on the longevity of that mud pit on Borrego, I'd guess volunteers are in short supply. (I did see that some work was done on the upper entrance to Cactus, which is greatly appreciated.) Give the Ranger a call with your concerns, and see what she has to say. Maybe she's got something planned that you could help out with. You could also see what SHARE's got going.

On the other hand, most of Whiting is in pretty good shape right now. Its definitely worth riding the whole park to check out the wildflowers.

    kioti,

Thanks for the hard work, figured you were STR when I met you there last night :) Rides great already. Imo Borrego is a blast right now and that part was the only downer.

Also props to whomever fixed up the first four or five turns in Cactus. They're packed and banked, can really zoom zoom.
