No one right answer here about cramps. There are lots of different factors when it comes to cramping and it's different for many. For me, it's more about pace and how hard I worked my muscles accompanied with not replenishing the fluids I used during that time. I've sweeped the VQ at the slowest pace with riders and still have them make cutoffs and I had no cramping issues for the entire route. Then again I've also done 2 consecutive laps at the 24 hrs of Adrenaline at Hurkey Creek at max effort and my quads and calves locked up on the last climb before the water tower like no other cramp before and at 24 miles,(1 lap=12 miles) that's not even half the distance or elevation of the VQ.

Here are couple links on info on the types of cramps, their causes and prevention:

What are the types and causes of muscle cramps?

How can muscle cramps be prevented?

Never a truer word spoken on cramps! I can cruise CC and be fine but nail it and I can be cramping before Pleasants.

Ok did get much time in the saddle this year maybe 2 Motorway loops and 1 road ride up Maple Springs were my big rides for the year due to my son baseball schedule that life so I didn't think I had enough time on the bike so at the start Blackstar I took it easy all the way to Maple Springs then on the way up MS stood up a few times and found out i could pick up the pace a little bit sweet so by the dirt road I think I went from 5.4 mph to 8-9 mph for a good bit of time next thing I know I am at the peak no cramps yet wow the mind game is over for now so on my way down UHJ there is a camera man time for a pose not look down there is a rock garden OMG to fast well here it goes lets do this (god I need you help!)we can clear this Ya we did it noway ok that was cool thanks Patrick for that "Great-photo shoot" I would have never tried to do that if I wasn't a ham, Ok so now here is LHJ hike down first climb BOOM! left cramp lockout straight one leg it down hill just taking it easy to Trabrco and the rest of the way out tuck and pedal finish 5.56 hours YA! did see that at all can't wait until next year. Thanks again WS The Path and everyone the helps this was awesome!

Ok check this out on my way down motorway I hear get out of may way over and over and then he makes his pass, What was the a "Card Board Number Plate" or was it some kind of protester don't know but on my way up MS there he is about a half mile past everyone he says oh this is a great spot for a Bong Hit. so I am thinking to myself (REALLY!
