Good god, this bear talk is going to make me faint. I spent all of last weekend completely freaked out about being attacked by one.

I THINK that I have a bike. I asked my friends dad if there was one that I could ride (of the twenty in the garage) and he pointed to one, and it looked like it was made to handle rugged terrain. I should probably take a look at it again.

Kyle, thank you for the advice. I am definitely not the type who would agree to meet someone to go into remote areas alone, but the reminder is definitely helpful.

It's got two wheels, a seat, and - as a pleasant twist - the word Tampico written down one of the bars. Tasty.

There is also lots of riding to the east of you in the Redlands, Highland, Yucaipa area. I would be willing to show you around some of these trails over here. We ride mostly up on Crafton Hills with numerous loops that we can piece together. Send me a PM if you want to join in the festivitys, festivitiys, festevitis...........join in the fun times!

I am super new to the site as well ... PM?
    I LOVE Yucaipa!

You have all been great, and have given some great advice. Looks like I should: read up on riding tips, actually GET on a bike and just ride it, check out the fully loop, and don't get in the car with strangers.

    Am I missing anything else?

28 too old to start? If you think so, maybe it is.

I'm 48 and in my third year of racing DH. I'll be better this year than I was last year, and definitely better than I was at 28, the age I was when I started mountain biking. There are guys (and gals) on this forum in their 50s who can ride me into the ground and will go down trails that most people couldn't walk down.

If you think you're too old and you're worried about getting hurt - you are and you will. Stay home. Attitude is everything.

You'll be just fine. Get out there, fall, have fun. The more you fall the better you'll get at it and the less you'll get hurt. Tuck and roll, don't extend limbs, and clench your hands and you'll be just fine.

Riding with guys like Gabe and Dr. Tiki is awesome and you should try to do it someday. I, however, wouldn't follow them haha. They're great riders and have skills greater than mine. The key to succeeding at riding is to push yourself just enough to get out of your comfort zone but not enough to recklessly endanger yourself. Don't ever feel like you have to do something just because someone else did.

Welcome from MoVal. As a newbie who has only been riding since February and started just before my 38th Bday, your not too old. I really like Sycamore Canyon in Riverside for my learning. Enough hills to challenge but enough single track and access trails to give plenty of options. I've learned a lot riding here. I still think i'm a newbie, but, i am starting to feel comfortable on a bike now. I usually ride Thursday early mornings to finish before the heat. If you ever want to ride, PM me and i'll show you around Sycamore.

Your bike might be a Scott Tampico. I have a Scott from 1998. Still in good condition and if it had rear disc tabs, would've been rebuilt to ride now. Learn on what you got. The upgrades will come soon enough. You asked if you will get hurt... if you end up liking mountain biking, then, yes. Your wallet is going to hurt a lot.

    Don't listen to these creeps!

    1. You are too old to ride a bike. Bikes are for kids (and anyways I bet you don't know the secret password).
    2. There's NOWHERE to ride here. Ask anyone (well, anyone that knows, of course). Especially not in your neighborhood at Southridge. No one rides there.
    3. You will never get hurt (do not read my signature, below...).

    All the best,

    - shud (your only true friend here)
