too tech- great question. i haven't dissected it. gray first showed it to me last week. i wasn't convinced it was human, but it didn't look like regular coyote scat.

but yesterday there were multiple piles. and it was malodorous. i'm no crap expert, but the consensus is that it's human. unnatural, but human.

a suggestion (seriously)- if people could report...fresh episodes, then at least we would have a heads/nostrils-up when riding out there.

the dude seems to "go" in cycles--a few months on, a few months off. i guess that means we're presently on a "brown alert".

My god, this is a funny thread, but seriously, I can't believe the poop phantom is back again at Oaks. It seems like he/she/it reappears every few months. I was hoping the camera would catch the evil-dooer, but I guess not. Oh, the new name given "Poop Chute" make me laugh out loud.

That's really gross! Sorry for those who got splattered.

It's only a matter of time until someone catches him/her/they/it in the act.

I rode the reverse route yesterday at about 3PM. No poop and a ranger was grooming that area, so the deposit arrived later in the day. There were numerous kids at the top of "Robbers Roost", and maybe they're the culprits. Anyway these incidents seem (to me) to coincide with school vacations.

    the plot thickens...

^then we might not be talking about the same place. this is on the fireroad; it's the first right-hand turn--about 100 yards--below the tower when you first drop in from the top.

i rode through around 5:30 and there were numerous piles- so many that it was hard to ride around...

Multiple landmines huh, once I start, i'm not stopping.. sort of a skill to strategically place a zig-zag route along that bend. I can't tell if i'm more grossed out or impressed. Just remember, ride safe and try not to eat sh!t!!!

The Oaks trail crew will be building cheater lines around the affected zone of infuence. Has there been any TP observed during reconaisance missions or is a fire and forget weapon most feared?

that would be the zone of effluence or the sphincter of influence.

maybe people could post pictures and show the lines that they take through the area?

tp? he's too savvy for that. he seems to prefer the stealth of the "hit it and quit it" technique.

    some observations:
    1) poop is usually spread out (deliberately) in a 6"-8" long line across the trail, almost always in the same spot on the single-track below the tower
    2) it seems to happen in the late afternoon and in spurts, maybe a few months in between
    3) this has been occurring for maybe 2 years that I am aware of, dozens of separate occasions that i've noticed
    4) i suspect it's human derived but it might be dog- either way someone bags it and spreads it across the trail
    5) camera idea didn't work. perhaps only a surveillance video stationed far away to not be seen might give us an idea (height/sex/build) of the phantom pooper
    6) maybe it really is a phantom

    some ideas:
    1) report freshies to the ranger and take note of any unusual characters in the area. perhaps the rangers will run stings if enough people complain
    2) report here as well
    3) i'm going to start writing down times and dates. perhaps a pattern will emerge

god willing, we will catch this deranged individual.
    this is a funny post.

Some thoughts in case you actually see the culprit.

    Not worried if kids.

But if an adult or especially adults, be careful about a face-to-face confrontation. Adults into these scatological activities can be very primitively organized regarding their psyche and can act out violently when surprised and confronted. They come prepared and have rehearsed/fantasized, so who knows what else they have on them, which I would be concerned about edged weapons; much more primitive and personal than a firearm.

If I ever came across the culprit, I'd take photos and splatter (pun intended) the mug shots/compromising shots over the various local websites, along with handing over the photos to the Rangers. These passive-aggressive folks hate having the public spotlight on them.
