Yesterday, we climbed from Oak Mesa in La Verne to Sunset Ridge. The descent was into Cow Canyon Saddle and Mt. Baldy Village. There was scattered patches of snow between Colver Peak and Sunset Peak. On the north side between the peak and Cow Canyon Saddle, there were large sections of snow.

If you haven't ridden it lately, the lower half into Cow Canyon Saddle has been graded. It's now true fireroad, instead of an overgrown one.

With this week's weather, I suspect the snow to be gone soon.

Can I ask the route you take for this? I ride Marshall from Oak Mesa a lot and have taken that route to Potato so know that area, where does one branch off to Sunset? Thanks!

    There isn't route from Marshall.

It starts at the back of the gated housing at the end of Wheeler (past the school). Go through the gate, keep riding up hill until the road ends and look for the dirt road on your right. It'd be pretty hard to miss it.

If you have access to google earth. It should be pretty easy to locate.

There is a firebreak that goes from the Potato saddle up to Sunset. But it is the ultimate hike a bike and I've only seen hikers take it.

We start at Oak Mesa and as chupacabra says, you have to enter the gated community at the top of Wheeler. The trail is steep and never crowded. The climb is similar to Mt. Wilson Toll Rd. It is a gem of a trail.
